I went in to my office today to prepare to teach a class. It was a class I had prepared to teach the week before my accident three Septembers ago.
It is funny how pulling up the file on the computer and seeing the date on it triggered a very strong sense of how I must have felt in those pre-brain injury days. It was a very strong feeling and I was overcome with emotion. I thought back to when I was preparing the course materials pre-brain injury and reflected that I would have had no idea that my life was about to change forever. I was in a very happy space, with such optimism for the future. That led me to the feeling that as I was preparing today for tomorrow's class I have no way of knowing what tomorrow might bring. We only have the moment we are now living. I hope nothing bad happens to any of you tomorrow or to myself for that matter! I feel very sad tonight after that experience. On top of that my son was cleaning out his room and pulled out a box with some photos of me pre-injury. I look bright and alive in them. Not how I feel these days. I am sure there are some of you who share my emotions. I wanted to share this and wish everyone continued healing, personal growth and love. Carpe diem. It is all we have!

What happened: Legs pulled forward by a parent's hockey stick while resting at the side of the rink at a family skate....sent me straight back. I hit the back of my head (with helmet) on the ice, bounced a few times, unconscious for a few minutes. September 11, 2011. Off work since then…I work part-time at home when I can. It has been hell but slowly feeling better (when I am alone☺). Current symptoms: Vision problems (but 20/20 in each eye alone!) – convergence insufficiency – horizontal and vertical (heterophoria), problems with tracking and saccades, peripheral vision problems, eyes see different colour tints; tinnitus 24/7 both ears; hyperacusis (noise filter gone!), labyrinthian (inner ear) concussion, vestibular dysfunction (dizzy, bedspins, need to look down when walking); partial loss of sense of smell; electric shocks through head when doing too much; headaches; emotional lability; memory blanks; difficulty concentrating. I still can’t go into busy, noisy places. Fatigue. Executive functioning was affected – multi-tasking, planning, motivation. Slight aphasia. Shooting pain up neck and limited mobility at neck. Otherwise lucky! Current treatments: Vestibular therapy, Vision therapy, amantadine (100 mg a day), acupuncture and physiotherapy for neck, slow return to exercise, magnesium, resveratrol, omega 3 fish oils, vitamins D, B and multi. Optimism and perserverance. Last edited by Mokey; 09-03-2014 at 04:16 AM. Reason: Typo |
