Confused Severe recurrent dizziness for more than 1.5 yrs

My 36 yr old, former amateur boxer, single parent sister has been suffering with recurrent, severe dizziness; light and sound sensitivity; loss of concentration and major mood swings for the past 1 1/2.

She noted that she had never been diagnosed with a concussion while she was boxing but did note she had a "few head blows". She had been to multiple specialists - neurologist, audiologists and headache specialists. Unfortunately, none have been able to give her a specific diagnosis or relief.

She has been prescribed several physical therapy treatments and pharmaceutical treatments (klonopin, antidepressants). Currently, she has learned to cope with the dizziness but I am worried that this may be undiagnosed post concussion disorder and left untreated could develop into more severe issues.

Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations on a specialist who may be able to help? As with any former athlete, she is stubborn and does not want to hurry up and wait. She has grown very frustrated on the process. Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. As a family member, I'm frustrated as I have exhausted my medical expertise as a researcher. Thank you !

Kelnot,

Welcome to NeuroTalk. I bet your sister has suffered many concussions. She just worked past/through them. Plus, many sub -concussive impacts.

Has she been assessed by a Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapist ? Sounds like it may help. She also may have a subtle upper neck injury that needs careful treatment.

Undiagnosed PCS will not develop into something worse unless her dizziness causes her to fall and injure herself.

Sounds like she does have PCS, but there is no treatment for it. Nutrients to lessen nerve damage and natural anti imflammatories and turmeric for pain is how I cope.
