Default Anxiety med?

At a recent appointment with my neurologist, he seems to think that the only reason I am not going to college is because of my "anxiety." I am not going to college right now because of my symptoms, not because of anxiety.
Anyway he wrote a script for Zoloft, which I believe is an antidepressant. Have you ever taken Zoloft for anxiety problems after a tbi? Can you recommend a "straight-out" anxiety med that I can take when it gets really bad?
Thanks.

Any of the benzodiazepines work for those sudden anxiety episodes. Taking Zoloft with all of its side-effects is a bit extreme in my book.

Klonopin is my favorite. I have it on the shelf 'just in case.'

Why does a neurologist care about you going to college ? Do you go to your neuro appointments with your mother ?

I agree with Mark about Zoloft and it's side effects. I was prescribed it and began taking it about 2 weeks after I hit my head. I would say the "adjustment" period (first 2-3 weeks) is brutal. The anxiety lingered and at times was worse. I honestly can't say if it was me or the med side effect.

It also gave me muscle twitches throughout my body that are now starting to subside after being off the med for 17 days now.

I was only on 50mg then dropped to 25mg. My doctor said that dose was not "therapeutic" and that someone with my anxiety level needed to me on at least 100mg. I never followed his advice. I know my body and I know this medication wasn't for me. I'm shocked at how long I stayed on it. I think I was trying to appease the MD and my family.

I didn't want everyone to blame all my other symptoms on anxiety which so many do when they've never walked a mile in your shoes. I would say try mediation or prayer and look at Mark's and others recommendation for natural supplements that help ease anxiety.

I took the benzo route the first 2 weeks after my accident and it exacerbated all my symptoms and made my anxiety come back X10 after I would wake up. That's just me, it may not affect you in the same manner.

Sorry- I feel like this post is all over the place, but I've been where you are and anxiety almost took over my life. Well, let me rephrase, it did take over my life and I had to fight very hard to get it back.

I took a semester off nursing school and as hard as the decision was to make, I know now it was for the best. You can't concentrate when you are full of anxiety. It affects sleep, diet and attitude.

Hope this helps. Good luck to ya!
