I know that drinking alcohol is really bad for pcs. I never drink alcohol since I'm 17 but my mom likes to cook with wine or beer from time to time.
should I not eat those meals or is it ok to have a little bit of alcohol? |

Cooking with wine or beer evaporates all the alcohol since alcohol boils at 173 degrees F.

Thank you for your reply mark
Does it really evaporate all of the alcohol though? I heard that there's always some alcohol left and that's why I am concerned. So theoretically if there were some alcohol left would that harm me/my brain? |

When you cook with something like red wine in an Italian sauce for example, you're not using all that much, so even if the alcohol isn't burned off fully, you're really not going to be ingesting very much. 1/4 cup of red wine in a massive bowl of spaghetti sauce won't give you very much alcohol once placed on the plate.
I always thought it burned off totally myself, but when I looked up information about that I found websites saying that quite a lot of it is left behind, so I don't really know what is real. I personally wouldn't worry about it too much. Just my thoughts. btw, you can buy something called verjuice or verjus. It's made from unfermented grapes and is alcohol free. Used for cooking purposes. Maybe if you're concerned you could buy your mum a bottle of that for the kitchen. |

It's not *really* bad. I had two beers yesterday after a very long period of greentea-totalling and I felt smarter than ever. No remaining effects whatsoever on the next day. Just the same mild headache I've been having for months now.
I think you're being paranoid. The negligible amount of alcohol in your food is hardly going to have any effect. Of course, theoretically, it could be somewhat worse for you depending on your particular health condition, but unless her cooking actually makes you feel worse, I wouldn't worry about it. (Or maybe not even then if you're mom is one of those women who tend to get very self-conscious about their cooking ) Interestingly enough, there's even some research that suggests alcohol in the blood at the time of a traumatic brain injury may mitigate the negative effects of the trauma. (On the other hand, it probably significantly increases the risk of a head trauma ocurring in the first place) |
