Default Supplement Help

I take all of the suggested supplements on the vitamin regimen.

I'm curious about these two:

http://energizeorganics.com/energize-ingredients/

http://www.swansonvitamins.com/swans...omplex-60-caps

I ask because I'm hesitant with supplements like rhodiola that increase serotonin. I have a form of schizophrenia and I'm already taking medicine that affects serotonin levels. I know the owner of Energize Organics had some serious head injuries and it helped him heal. I also have heard adaptogens suggested to help with brain injuries as well.

Thanks!

I would not mix such a broad mix of naturals with a psychoactive med.

Read this transcript, especially starting at 5 minutes.

Buck,

I have read a bunch of thou shalt not mix also when it comes to natural mood enhancements and psychotropics.

I think I would stay away from those combos.

Thanks for the feedback, Mark and Bud. I appreciate it, and I'll take your advice.

Mark, I read the transcript. She said incorporating blueberries, dark chocolate, and omega-3 rich foods to the diet, intermittent fasting, slight (20-30%) caloric restriction, learning, reducing excessive stress, and sex promote neurogenesis. Also, sleep deprivation and alcohol reduce neurogenesis.

Have you found any other foods to be beneficial to the brain? I've heard about chia seeds, coconut oil and unsweetened coconut, eating lots of veggies and good fats, and limiting processed foods, sugars, and gluten. I'm just wondering if there is anything else I can do.

Side note: I had a psychotic break last spring and was hospitalized for 6 days. When I got out, I literally craved fish and fish oil. Fish was my first meal out of the hospital. I later read that people with schizophrenia tend to have lower levels of omega-3's. I just thought this was interesting. I've definitely learned to listen to my brain well on year three of recovery. I wish I would have listened to it better before, but the past is unchangeable.

Lightbulb

the research into consequences of the MTHFR mutations and various mental conditions is advancing quickly today.

This set of mutations affects how the body can methylate (attach methyl groups) to substrates to create the neurotransmitters and other tissue enzymes that take care of our brain and body in general.

http://cdn.neiglobal.com/content/blo...d_up_mthfr.pdf

This DNA test is easy and fairly affordable now. What lacks is finding a doctor who understands this.

Another helpful site to read is MTHFR.net

If a person has this mutation, they need methyl forms (active versions) of folate and B12 for life.

I believe that some here on TBI forum may benefit from learning about this and getting the DNA testing.

We are seeing members on NeuroTalk's other forums having positive results with this testing.
