Default How we change/adjust after injury

Almost two years post injury and I will shortly be given a programme by neuro-Physio which I am looking forward to. When describing right side impairment and the number of times you drop, break or damage things he commented giving a logical perspective . . . . but does one do this post accident?

"Take a pot sitting on the bench or stove. You lift the lid before picking up the pot thus determining what is or isn't in it thus determining how one is going to lift it, one hand or two."
Oh how I smiled, the light bulb going on! Post accident one doesn't stop and think and lift the lid before moving pot. One just picks up pot; one second it is in my hand, next minute it's gone.

Training myself to stop and think before acting has not been easy, before one seemed to do this seamlessly, not so now. Just another facet of adjustment one has to make but at least I am becoming more aware of it, to say nothing of multi tasking. Now that is a topic in itself, so many burnt offerings as meals. One almost acquired a taste for charcoal . . . comparatively speaking, improvement noted.

It sounds like you are getting some good help. Learning to act with purpose can be very good at helping one move forward. The old way of reactive or instinctive movements can cause us big problems. I'm missing part of a finger because I was not acting with purpose.

Regarding burnt offerings.

I have to use a timer anytime I turn the stove on. A carry timer would be best because then, if you walk away, you still hear it. There are devices that shut the stove off automatically if safety is a concern. Most house fires are started at the stove.

Yes, my children call my pork chops pork Jerky now. They think it's quite funny, though I use the timer now when I remember to set it.

Chasann,

I was amazed at how many little things I had forgot, little routine things I knew didn't seem right based in the past but small details were omitted until one by one the light began to come back on...it has been a weird experience.

Joanne,

I love to cook for my family and have always put on a good spread. It has taken me 2 years to stop burning things....I NEVER did before but sure couldn't seem to keep it straight after till just recently.

A timer definitely helped - as you say tho - when I remembered to turn it on.

I find that I am really a lazy or simplified cook now, just the basics, fewer steps and as a result greater success but please 'do not distract or keep talking to me'.
That gaurentees burnt offerings.
