For the last couple of weeks, I've been house-sitting for a buddy in a very nice luxury beach condo north of Miami and the condo complex has a heated swimming pool. So I decided to start swimming again in the mornings and try to work on my shoulders/neck muscles to get them working again.
At first, it was tough, but I slowly ramped up to about 30 minutes of breast stroke at a light pace. One major thing that I noticed right away is that my neck pain/stiffness that was radiating into my shoulder/upper back is gone. Now when I wake up I don't have a stiff neck anymore. So if you're able to swim, even maybe five minutes at a time, then do it. I should've started this a long time ago.

12/02/2012 - Light concussion at boxing practice. Ended up having PCS for about 3 months. March 2013 - Thought that since most of my symptoms resolved I could start having fun again. Went snowmobiling once (didn't hit my head) and concussion symptoms returned and got even worse than before. June 2013 - accidentally bumped my head against a deck railing, and had a month-long setback. November 2013 - drove to work after a big snowstorm and the roads were very rough, ended up having another setback. 2014 - Having setbacks after coughing/sneezing too much, or someone slapping me on the back, or any other significant jarring. Feb 2014 - Started seeing Atlas Orthogonal chiro - most helpful doc so far. June 2014 - Two months of physical/visual therapy - no noticeable improvement. September 2014 - Diagnosed with Perilymph Fistula in right ear. November 2014 - Fistula surgery (switched to left ear before the surgery after additional testing). January 2016 - Quit work to "work" on figuring out PCS, so far it seems that eyes/vision issues are the most contributing factor, especially computer work. Current symptoms are: inconsistent sleep patterns, headaches, vertigo/dizziness, anxiety/panic attacks, mental fog/problems with concentration, problems with computer screens. |

Works for me, I started swimming after my accident, it was all I could tolerate. Glad you rediscovered it.

Yeah, swimming has been constantly coming up in my research and from a couple of doctors and a friend of mine that dealt with PCS, but I've been focusing on doing stationary bike/walking all this time. Glad I finally started swimming and am able to tolerate it fairly well.
One thing I can't seem to tolerate really well is holding my breath under water. Get a headache for the rest of the day usually.

Hi russiarulez,
I have been swimming 1 month after my road accident which gave me PCS symptoms. My symptoms was not very pronounced and i thought i was nearing the light at the tunnel but this week the dizziness, headaches, stiff neck, forgetfulness is back. Strangely i do not have all these when im swimming. Just curious, are you still experiencing everything in your "Current Symptoms"? |

Maxcjs101 sounds like your injury is fairly recent? If so then be careful of pushing yourself both physically and/or mentally. It took me a long time to figure out what was causing my setbacks and I got much worse when I overdid it a while back.
Do you still work full time? If so, have you noticed that the symptoms get worse when you work? I'm still experiencing symptoms in my signature, main things are computer screens, inconsistent sleep (can never get a good night sleep), anxiety/panic thankfully it's not constant anymore, dizziness almost gone (mostly when I walk), sometimes having issues concentrating but I think it has to do with anxiety.

I had a motor vehicle accident on October where after a few days my chronic headache & dizziness started plus so many weird symptoms like sleep problems, jelly legs etc. It was so bad for the first 1 and a half month where it gradually lessened up until last week. Not sure the flare up was because of my sleep (automatically waking up around 6 or 7 daily sometimes with headache behind my head plus achy neck too). I couldnt sleep well last night and i woke up with a pounding headache today. And recently i have been tasked with a project in my office but im not sure if its causing this. I've done 2 head MRIs and my neuro says its chronic tension headaches but doesnt buy the Post Concussion Syndrome thing. |
