Default trigeminal neuropathy treatments + botox

I suffer from sever trigeminal neuropathy on the left side of the face; Dosage of Neurontin at 1200 mg per day takes away some of the pain, but not the severest pain between the mouth and lip which makes it increasingly difficult to talk during the day. Alll suggestions are welcome. Has anyone had botox injections for trigeminal neurpathy? The face is throbbing as I write and thanks to all for any help. I am at my wit's end and do not know what to do. More Neurontin is an option but as it hasn't doesn't anything for the severest pain I doubt that more if the sale will do. Best to all, Buffy

Sorry to see newcomers here. Since nerve pain is difficult (if not impossible) to alleviate, it's not surprising to see your post.

I've found relaxation and meditation are my mainstays for minimizing my pain. I just posted a response to AM222 about it, if you're interested.

My TN is not typical as when it is active, my pain is constant, as in does not stop until I sleep. None of these searing pain flashes caused by a breeze across my face. It just starts one morning and keeps going until it decides to go. Sometimes hours, sometimes days, occasionally weeks. I didn't really think about that aspect of it when I posted earlier, though. In that case, meditation may not be any good for typical TN.

I do sympathize though. The last time my ATN was really bad, I could hardly open my mouth for a week, and the entire right side of my head felt like it was on fire. People were asking me if I was mad at them because I wasn't talking to anybody...lol.

The coolest thing is now it's starting on my left side too.

Buffy 1, I just came across your posting by googling trigeminal neuropathy and botox and could have written the posting myself. My neuropathy results from the the removal of a third molar, i.e., a wisdom tooth. I've gone everywhere and spoken to everyone and nothing really helps. I currently take Lyrica and Tegretol 3x daily, Tramadol for pain before eating, and apply a Lidoderm patch to my jaw while sleeping. I know and try meditation and tried accupuncture - which relaxed me wonderfully but did nothing for the neuropathy. Have you tried Botox and did it help? I hope this message reaches you and I truly look forward to a reply.

My mother experienced this several years ago to the point they were keeping her drugged in order to get any relief. Could not eat - brushing her teeth would set the shocks off - hot cold food - fan blowing on her face etc. I found a specialist that performed surgery - with the target of installing a pad around the nerve - behind the ear. During surgery they found a small vein wrapped around the nerve and clipped it away. This along with a glycerol injection in the nerve; plus very LOW dosage of a Neurontin generic drug has made her life worth living again. She was at the point --------- she did not want to continue. IN the last 4-5 years she has lived a comfortable life with min / very minor pain from time to time.
