I was so stupid to take a perfect healthy tooth out 2 days ago because i could swear the pain was coming from it. The tooth had 2 root canals already but still was tab sensitive and i could not chew on it. Dentist did many many xrays, Cts, nothing wrong. Now i took it out and i am in more pain than before. I hope it will calm down sometime. I have a pain management doctor ( he will be mad if i tell him what it did) but nothing helped so far. Elavil, Gabapentin - no luck there, What can i do?? I am frustrated and sometimes i dont want to live anymore. I am 28 and cannot imagine living my life in pain. What do you do????? thank you birgit |

Sorry about your pain, i know what you are going through. I am 23 and have been dealing with this pain for almost 4 yrs now. I hate it when the pain goes into my teeth, it is very frustrating cause you never know if its the TN or is you have an actual tooth problem. Drives me nuts. I have TN on both sides of my face, but my teeth on the left side are extremely sensitive from the TN and cause me a lot of problems. I avoid chewing on that side as much as possible and drink through a straw to avoid cold or hot liquids touching my teeth as much as possible. Other than that I try to distract myself and distance myself from the pain as much as possible, which doesnt always work. I often wonder how I am going to live with this for the rest of my life and not go completely crazy just wanting the pain to stop and go away. So you are not alone, and I hope the pain fades soon.

Here are some meds to suggest to your doctor. There are all sorts of anticonvulsants and antidepressants, but a pain doctor I've seen recommended these. Klonopin - fast acting and works well on the burning pain. I've used it along with Ultram ER(works a LOT better than the regular and your pain doc should know that). Both baclofen and zanaflex are muscle relaxers which can also help with nerve pain. Remember that we all react different to meds but this should give you plenty to talk about. The Ultram ER and klonopin combo works fast as you don't have to wait for them to build up in your system. Let us know what you try and what works for you. Hang in there!

Hi there,
I have the same probs u have. i had tooth problems and i actually had dental work. and i thought it was my tooth and they determined prior to doing a third repeat root canal that it wasn't a tooth problem after all. I had TN. after a couple months and many meds later.. i'm still trying stuff out but i feel like i'm working pretty good on: TOPOMAX - anticonvulsant ULTRAM - Pain killer those two combined i feel like are doing better for me.... im on low dosages at this point but i'm pretty sure soon enough i will go higher... u and i are on the same boat. a lot of people get scared that its not TN or ATN coz of the pain in the teeth, but believe me, i've read more than enough, we're all in this together... u should also see a neurologist.. i suggest.... take care buddy! |

ive tried carbamazepine and had an allergic reaction, and my doctor referred me to a different doctor to find a different regement of meds. Ive used loratab and flexeril together to help with the pain and to help me sleep. Ive also used tramadol, though it does nothing for me.

Hi,
I have lost four (4) healthy teeth's on the right side and today I am very angry about the dentist doing that with me. After that I was in situation that some doctors meant it is from my teeth but then I went regularly to make x-rays from all teeth’s and it was not the cause. My pains are on the bottom on the cheek holes and there is some very dry mucus. It is some kind of sinusitis, again coming from somewhere else. That means that the mucus is pressing into jaw bones and it looks like there are teeth pains. They are not. I have also teeth and jaw bone pains, especially after eating something. I may not eat cold, hot, spicy or any kind of sour. To me help pills with hydrochloride. They are muscle relaxants or for muscle spasm. I am taking since 4 years Ephedrine hydrochloride pills for decongestion of my mucus membrane, but they are not good for blood pressure. I had always low blood pressure and now have high blood pressure. I have to stop with them and find something else. Bozena |

I was just reading your post and am going through the same thing right now. I had a tooth extracted and have been having extreme facial pain ever since. I thought it was something dental related also, but have now been told to see a neurologist. I can't imagine living my life in this kind of pain either. I wanted to see if you were finally able to get some kind of relief from this? |

All of you dear young people,
I want to speak to you about feeling that you do not want to live with this anymore. I know, personally, the pain that you experience. I know how bad it can get, so bad that you need to go to the hospital or ER for treatment. I know how it feels. There are so many things for you to live for - being in love, traveling to beautiful places, having wonderful pets, making good friends, eating delicious foods (when you can), watching great sunsets...so much to live for! Today is a bad day for me - I woke up in bad pain, which means that it will be with me for the rest of the day, and there is a good chance that I will have to go in for a shot. I have atypical pian, which means that it goes on and on and on, relentlessly. But I have the love of a beautiful man, who fights this monster with me. You will find this too. You will not be alone - there are people out there, wonderful people, that are there to be your friends, and support you, and sit by your side through the operations - all you have to do is learn how to ask. There are great doctors and surgeons, who will be your allies, you just have to have the patience to fire the bad ones and work at it tofind the good ones. People are good and they want to help you through this, if you let them. And if they don't, then you don't need them in your life. You are not alone with this monster - you have us too - and we KNOW just how bad it is. I just want you to know how many good things lie ahead for you in your lives, and I don't want you to miss out on all of those things. It's all about attitude - finding all of the positive things in your life, and being grateful for them - you know that old saying - count your blessings - it is really true. If you seek out all of the positive things, they are all there around you. Hold on to that - the things that we are lucky to have. The people who love us, the things that make us happy. I have a very far from perfect life - crappy things happen all of the time - but I always remember that it could be much worse. Much worse. And I guess that I am grateful that it isn't. Not yet. And I pray that I will have strength to handle it when it does. I choose to think that I will. I don't know why I sat down to write this - I guess because I am an older woman who wants to tell you that there are still really great things ahead for you. So please, hang in there, and keep talking to us. We will help to get you through all of this. Mylastnerve (Lily) |

Thanks Lily, for reminding ALL of us young and old that there is always something or someone to live for. My ATN episodes are sporadic, so I am one of the lucky ones, but fear that it will progress on to be more frequent. I keep praying it away. I also pray for all of you here that you will find relief.
I suggest to anyone who is experiencing the facial pain that proves not related to dental issues to see a good neurologist as soon as possible to receive the best treatment for your pain. I was under the impression that the usual pain drugs do nothing for the TN pain, but some of you say they help? Heat and tegretol are my current treatment and so far works pretty good, but I have to be at home to take it - makes me very sleepy. God bless you Lily, and the rest of us too. Rhonda |
