Although TN may be caused by MS, tumors, AVMs, ect. it is almost always (75-80%) caused by a blood vessel pushing against the trigeminal nerve. Tests like MRIs, Cat scans, blood tests, ect. rule out other problems but do not usually show proof of TN. Sometimes MRIs with dye can show a neurosurgeon how close blood vessels are to the trigeminal nerve, but in my experience only neurosurgeons are educated enough to notice these small compressions. For example my family doc, neurologist, and radiologist never mentioned anything abnormal with my MRIs. After my neurosurgeon ordered MRI with dyes he told me the vessel seems to be riding against the nerve. Overall there is no test that says for sure if it is TN. I guess a functional MRI can prove you're in pain but no one has ever ordered one for me. Check out www.facepain.us they got a bunch of video clips answering common questions. |

Since June 2011 I have had my back 4 lower left teeth all crowned (1 root canal ) and upper left back 2 teeth (again 1 root canal ).......then 2 weeks ago the pain started in my lower left jaw/teeth of a much more severe and 'striking' nature. Crippling, drop to your knees, can't speak pain. Now me and my dentist don't know what the real reason for the TN is. Caused by dental treatment or because of TN. My GP also does not know either. Tegretol helping. Actually so much so I can't almost beleive how bad it was. I do however remember stating i could not live with this pain.
I also get about 4 migraine over left eye per year and don't yet know if connected (awaiting nuro appt). Seems many of our stories are similar. |

Have any of you tried MVD?**
My dad has ATN and believe it was caused by the dental extraction of five teeth in one operation, but our neurosurgeon wants to purse with MVD. According to that website, if we are certain that it's from dental trauma, none of us should undergo MVD. Last edited by Chemar; 01-26-2012 at 07:21 PM. MVD is for fixing any compression on the nerve . If you know it is from dental work... I agree with your idea that MVD May not be a wise or helpful surgery . I would tend to think if there isnt any compression and it is from dental work then going and manipulating the nerve and vessels could very well make things worse. That is my thoughts I am not a doctor. I also know that MVD dose help many people and is recommended as an option for lots of t.n. folks. there could be a compression coming from dental work I guess . Did the neuro show you on MRI a compression of the nerve?
here are links about MVD and yes lots of us here have had that surgery .I am not one of them. http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread2052.html http://www.skullbaseinstitute.com/vi..._neuralgia.htm both of these along with other very useful info are in the stickies at the top of this forum... Please read the threads , and posts I know you will find plenty of info. PEACE BMW...Tina |
