Default A completely new perspective on Iodine

You'll have to pardon me. I haven't found yet how to search to see if a topic has already been covered. I would hate to jam up the forum with something that has been recently and heavily discussed.

So, a question. Has doses of Iodine, in the range of 12 - 50 mg been discussed? This comes from the pioneering work of Guy Abraham et. al at UCLA

This treatment concerns me.

There are no studies done on this treatment, and it appears to be only a doctor's opinion on experiments he did on patients in his practice. Granted he researched it some, but there are no replicated medical studies on it at PubMed.

The product typically recommended is made by this same doctor.
While he claims 4000 patients were treated, this "idea" of his is on the net and anyone can buy this strong iodine product and treat themselves. This is where I diverge from it, and caution people reading here to only do this with a doctor's supervision, and have periodic tests to evaluate what is happening to the thyroid.

There is only one group of people in the world who consume naturally large amounts of iodine in the diet. A small group of Japanese who eat alot of seaweed. Since nutritional research has shown that indigenous peoples who eat restricted diets, change genetically to accomodate to these foods, it does not generalize to other people who did not evolve eating them.
For example, Native peoples at the North Pole, eat very high fat diets, and low carbs. When they try to eat the traditional Western diet, they gain weight. Also they cannot handle alcohol.

So to point to the Japanese villagers who consume large amounts of Iodine, safely, as an example of what others can do, is naive IMO. They may have evolved a way to excrete the iodine safely.

I searched this topic more than once over the years, and feel that self medication with high Iodine is not wise. If you can find a doctor to monitor you on this, that is the way to go.
There are just no other papers on PubMed that do careful studies and that have outcomes to evaluate.

A corollary to this issue is what is happening with Vit D within the last 5 years. This nutrient has been researched by many different scientists in different areas of the world, and finally a concensus has been reached for the general public.
This type of change is very different from the iodine issue.
example:

This is an example of iodine video...in contrast.

There is just a paraphrasing of Dr. Brownstein's book.
Claims, with no studies to back them up. Low Iodine causes parotid stones? Where is the proof of this? Low iodine causes constipation?
There are just many many causes of constipation.
So if someone sees this video, and is constipated, they might use this high iodine product without supervision?

Most people and some doctors still do not realize that TussiOrganidin cough syrup and tablets used to contain substantial amounts of iodine.
The FDA took them off the market after studies showed they were harmful. TussiOrganidin now has guiafenesin in it. In the old days of Original TussiOrganidin, it was almost the most commonly given cough RX in this country. We went thru gallons a week of it. Just about everyone who went to the doctor with a cough got this. So it was heavily consumed and made alot of money for Wallace (who marketed it at the time.) Wallace became Medpointe which is now Meda...and still has the government contract on potassium iodide for nuclear wars/accidents in this country.

Here is a link listing the reasons iodinated glycerol was taken off the market (old Tussi-Organidin formula)
http://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/?objectid=0...27DE7ED05A0FB7

This is an example of a warning letter issued to a maker of a potassium iodide spray to be used during nuclear accidents:

The GRAS safety and efficacy of potassium iodide, is here:
http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/script...Listing&id=247
Quote:
Available biological information shows that ingested potassium iodide and other iodides are readily absorbed and utilized to the extent required for nutritional needs, the excess being excreted primarily in the urine. There is no evidence in the studies on experimental animals and man available to the Committee that indicates acute or chronic toxic effects, including mutagenic, teratogenic, and carcinogenic effects, resulting from the consumption of potassium iodide by euthyroid individuals in amounts that are several orders of magnitude greater than those now being consumbed in the daily diet.
Euthyroid= people without thyroid disease.
Also the doses for the GRAS list are not in the range of Iodoral.
When 150 mcg =.150mg is the RDA and 12.5mg is the lowest dose of Iodoral. That is about 100 times the RDA...and does not fall into the food, GRAS usage as an example.
