My first response is that no company is going to be able to make a product that is as high a quality as you can make in your kitchen. That said, my final answer has to be... I don't know. You'd have to call them and ask them if they use bones and an acid in their processing. Each company would be different in its procedure. There is another article there about using a crock pot to make soup broth so that, basically, it takes almost none of your time to make it. It's pretty much as simple as scraping your bones from your chicken dinner (or fish, or whatever bones you have) into your crockpot afterward, rather than scraping them into the garbage can.

After reading Dr. Michael Lyons's book "Healing the Hyperactive Brain" I understood the importance of Omega 3 oils and magnesium for proper brain function. Budwig also mentions Omega 3 for brain function. I also learned that many ADD/ADHD and autistic children are magnesium deficient. (also, diabetics and people on chemo for cancer test low on magnesium) I came up with a simple recipe for a topical cream containing simple ingredients that is quickly absorbed through the skin. My sister uses it for daily massages on her children (all three with adhd/autism behaviors)and, though not a cure, their concentration and behavior has improved. 1. Pour a bottle of unflavored Milk of Magnesia though paper or cloth filter (I used a #6 cone coffee filter). Discard the liquid and keep the thick residue. 2. Melt coconut oil (I melt a pint jar of coconut oil in a pan of hot water) Note: you can buy coconut oil in most health food stores--- less expensive in Asian or International grocery stores --- I buy it locally in an Asian market for about $6.00 a pint. 3. Combine and mix with a hand-held electric mixer (stick type works best): 1 cup melted coconut oil (Omega 6 essential fatty acid) 1/2 cup flaxseed oil (Omega 3 essential fatty acid) 3/4 cup Milk of Magnesia residue(thick residue from the filter) This mixture will seize up into soft margarine consistency within seconds! 4. Store it in clean small lidded containers. I keep it in the refrigerator but it holds consistency if left at room temperature except during very hot weather. 5. Use liberally as a hand and/or body lotion. It absorbs quickly. Improved brain function, increased memory and concentration is discernable about an hour after use. 6. It may also have an effect on body mass through eliminating excess water in the tissues, I've been using it lately on my "midriff bulge" and I'm not as puffy as before. Also, more frequent urination for a few hours after application. I don't know exactly what is going on, but my clothes are fitting much better! |

Bloomergal, thank you for posting your recipe! I had the ingredients on hand, so I whipped up a batch. So creamy, soaked right in to my very dry skin. Even my very dry and cracked feet felt soooo much better. The stuff smells wonderful.

I made some for my co-worker's brother, who tested magnesium deficient due to many rounds of chemo treatment. He hates pills and won't eat veggies, so this is a way to add magnesium and Omega 3 that doesn't have to go through his digestive system to be effective.

When I first tried it, I noticed I was much more organized in my thinking, didn't forget my keys, etc. I looked it up in the book "Healing the Hyperactive Brain" and found that magnesium bonds with the Omega 3 of the flaxseed oil to form DHA--- fuels the brain! A bonus for me as I'm at that age of having numerous "senior moments" every day.

Magnesium also dilates blood vessels, and improves circulation.
It does many many things! ![]()

Flax oil is very good for the skin. It helps acne when used orally.
I used it for my son, when he was a teen. And the magnesium is needed for the metabolism of Omega-3 oils as well. So is B6. My only concern with this homemade recipe is dosing when small children are using it. The Kirkman product is standardized to give 100mg of mag per gram used. (they have a measurer). When you make your own, you really can't be that accurate. So I would caution people not to use a homemade product on small children because their RDA for magnesium is about 80mg a day. (unless you know for sure how much they are getting) Magnesium also softens the skin when used as epsom salt baths. I really appreciate your posting this homemade recipe, Bloomer!

Do you think I could substitute an Omega 3-6-9 oil for the flax in this recipe? |
