Default Substitution Opinion

You could do the substitution of oils, but I don't recommend it because it would throw the ratio out of kilter. Coconut oil is Omega 6 and Flaxseed oil is Omega 3.

The recipe is based on 2 parts Omega 6 to 1 part Omega 3

Substituting the oil would probably not be harmful, but may not be as beneficial.

I buy organic Flax Seed oil at Trader Joe's $7.99 for a 16 oz bottle

Hope this helps!

(also, diabetics and people on chemo for cancer test low on magnesium)

I came up with a simple recipe for a topical cream containing simple ingredients that is quickly absorbed through the skin. My sister uses it for daily massages on her children (all three with adhd/autism behaviors)and, though not a cure, their concentration and behavior has improved.

1. Pour a bottle of unflavored Milk of Magnesia though paper or cloth filter (I used a #6 cone coffee filter). Discard the liquid and keep the thick residue.

2. Melt coconut oil (I melt a pint jar of coconut oil in a pan of hot water) Note: you can buy coconut oil in most health food stores--- less expensive in Asian or International grocery stores --- I buy it locally in an Asian market for about $6.00 a pint.

3. Combine and mix with a hand-held electric mixer (stick type works best):

1 cup melted coconut oil (Omega 6 essential fatty acid)
1/2 cup flaxseed oil (Omega 3 essential fatty acid)
3/4 cup Milk of Magnesia residue(thick residue from the filter)

This mixture will seize up into soft margarine consistency within seconds!

4. Store it in clean small lidded containers. I keep it in the refrigerator but it holds consistency if left at room temperature except during very hot weather.

5. Use liberally as a hand and/or body lotion. It absorbs quickly. Improved brain function, increased memory and concentration is discernable about an hour after use.

6. It may also have an effect on body mass through eliminating excess water in the tissues, I've been using it lately on my "midriff bulge" and I'm not as puffy as before. Also, more frequent urination for a few hours after application. I don't know exactly what is going on, but my clothes are fitting much better!

Argh I obviously did not drain the mil of magnesia enough because I have a soupy liquid. How many bottles of milk of magnesia does it take to get 3/4 of a cup of the residue.

I will try it again

Here is a chart showing the various fatty acids in the various oils:

http://curezone.com/foods/fatspercent.asp

You can see here that coconut oil is 91% saturated fat. (this is neither omega-3 or 6.) and only 3% omega-6

Flax oil is 58% Linolenic acid... omega-3
and 14% Linoleic acid ...omega-6
and 19% omega 9 monounsaturated (like in olive oil)

Flax oil is not 100% omega-3 as some people think. It is just the highest type with the highest percentage of the common oils.

So Mrsd D, maybe I could try a 3-6-9 oil in this recipe.

It funny I was reading that you can get out of balance if overdue one oil. I get alot of energy when I would take the coconut oil supplements. And I find that I feel better when taking a 3-6-9 oil than just a flax. I also do better inflammation wise when I take a GLA/Borage oil. I have to read up on which oil is which, I get confused whats 3 or 6 etc.

Also I tested low in oleic oil in a spectracell test I did.

I was thinking bout doing a fatty acid test to see what my different levels are.

Ok back to our regulalry scheduled magnesium thread.

Well, Shelley,

Over a decade ago when we started with the oils, I decided to use all 3. Flax, evening primrose and fish oil for this reason.
Back then it was new, and testing not easily available.

I found after a couple of years, I didn't need the primrose as much so I dropped it. But the GLA in it is important for conversion of the flax Omega 3 to other types in the body.
Males tend to have lower conversion than females, as a rule, because we are designed to provide EFAs to babies.

It is difficult to say how much of the flax omega-3 is absorbed into the body with that formula with coconut oil, and how much just stays in the skin. This is why I always recommend ORAL for EFA supplements. It is also hard to say how much of the magnesium is actually absorbed or stays in the skin. So keep that in mind. I am unsure if you could rely on skin absorption totally for your EFA dietary requirement.

The GLA in primrose is now often found in lip balms and some upscale cosmetics. (they call them liposomes in the fancy stuff).

Here is a chart of the breakdown of the fats in coconut oil:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coconut_oil

And yes, they would give energy...and improve the stress of glucose as a primary substrate in the mitochondria of cells.
This could be helpful for insulin resistance or improving exercise since the lactate load result would be less. (lactate causes pain in the muscles etc).

Lightbulb Magnesium for Memory:

From our own PsychCentral blog:

http://psychcentral.com/news/2010/02...ory/11633.html

Here is an excerpt:
Quote:
In the study, researchers from Tel Aviv University continued a project initiated during post-doctorate work by Dr. Inna Slutsky at MIT. The investigation is now a multidisciplinary effort focusing on a new magnesium supplement, magnesium-L-theronate (MgT), that effectively crosses the blood-brain barrier to inhibit calcium flux in brain neurons.

The new study found that the synthetic magnesium compound works on both young and aging animals to enhance memory or prevent its impairment. The findings were published recently in the scientific journal Neuron.

A small bottle of Milk of Magnesia is enough. A large is enough for two batches.

Filtering it in a cone-style paper coffee filter takes 30 -60 minutes.

I use the feature here called "new posts" all day long here.
This link to magnesium and memory popped up on that list and I just moved it here where it seems to fit.

But some days I do get up early, but not always!
