Lightbulb FYI: A vintage SlowMag advertisement:

Here is a link to my post on PN, showing a 1989 ad to
doctors and pharmacists about the new product SlowMag.

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread184674.html

I thought it was pretty interesting.

Default thanks so much

Just read the entire thread, so much useful information. My husband has been suffering severe anxiety, panic attacks, restlessness, tremor, loss of appetite etc since December. Doctors are finding nothing and think it's all in his head. Now I'm thinking magnesium deficiency could explain his problems. He's been on acid reducer medicine (pantoprazole) for over 4 years and in December he started taking ranitidine (Zantac) 300 mg (double the highest over the counter dose of Zantac) at night after seeing the doctor for heartburn at night. So now he's taking pantoprazole (Protonix) in the morning and the ranitidine at night. Heartburn is pretty much gone but I think he'd rather have the heartburn than all these other effects!

He also had a number of bad reactions to a number of other medicines prescribed at the same time for headaches and the anxiety and we also found the gas heater we were using was poisoning us with carbon monoxide.

Have been taking magnesium citrate (400 mg) and it seems to be helping somewhat but I wonder how much the heartburn meds are taking away. I'm going to have him try staggering the magnesium and other meds so he's not taking them at the same time and see if that helps. I'm also going to order the magnesium oil spray and change to magnesium glycinate and see if that helps. Don't want him to get sick from taking too much either though.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to NeuroTalk:

The heartburn meds affect many other nutrients:

calcium
magnesium
B12
folic acid
iron
zinc
some other trace minerals. (new information suggests this)

He should have a B12 test, and when the results come back he should get his numerical result. Doctors still follow the outdated lab ranges that go down very very low. The new low is 400pg/ml in US units. Anything below that or around that number should be supplemented with activated B12, called methylcobalamin.

Some people have a genetic error and cannot methylate folic acid and B12 in food to its active methylB12 form. There is a DNA test for this, and also it will result in elevated MMA and homocysteine. This is a hidden defect and will eventually compromise health and the cardiovascular system.
When you get the B12 testing for him, also request Vit D. Low D results in poor immune functions and poor calcium absorption.
Combined with heartburn meds, he could be very poor with calcium (as well as the magnesium).

This is our B12 thread:

Thumbs up

The wonderful CVS Epsom Lotion (magnesium topical) that was discontinued about a year ago by CVS... is BACK.

It is now called Morton Epsom Lotion and at WalMart.
http://www.walmart.com/search/search...h_constraint=0

Amazon has it listed but still not yet in stock.

The WalMart version is only 5.98 for an 8oz bottle which is 1/2 of the price CVS charged. I am sooooo relieved. I love this form of magnesium, since oral supplements tend to upset my
GI tract. Amazon's price will be in the $7.00 range when it comes in.

This daily rubbing of Epsom lotion into my wrists and inner arms has resulted in a huge lowering of my high blood pressure too. Now I am only on a very small dose of beta blocker, not the 3 high dose other drugs I used to need. My doctor was quite amazed in fact.

A special thank you to poster docmomma who found this and posted for us on the PN forum!

Default When to take Magnesium?

Hello,

I just got some Mag64, and had the dose recommended on bottle (2), and I had it with my lunch. but then I just read here to have half of the recommended dose. (ooops)

I will see how this works.

My question though is -- when do you recommend taking magnesium? Breakfast, lunch, dinner -- at night?

I am taking a lot of supplements right now, which, in combination with my vestibular therapy and light exercise are really working. I am feeling better from the Post Concussion Syndrom -- but have had some trouble with insomnia.

Someone else mentioned taking magnesium and some melatonin at night. I have taken melatonin before and had it last night and got a whole night of sleep. Yay! Even so, I don't want to overuse melatonin.

Anyhow, just wondering when I should take the Mag64.

Sincerely,

Poetrymom

[SIZE="1"]What happened. I was in a car accident 2-23-2013, and got a mild concussion from it. I had some time off for brain rest, got somewhat better, but slipped into PCS in March 2013.

Symptoms I had: dizziness, light and sound sensitivity, fatigue, tinitis, occasional headaches and migraines,

Symptoms as of 5--2013: poor sleep, tinitis, some confusion /short term memory blanks, balance. The other symptoms are mostly gone, but flare up if I OVERdo something.

Therapy I had: vestibular

3 months in: I could drive more and for longer distances. I felt like a younger, happier version of myself and I feel so blessed to have this feeling.

9 months in and I am working full time. I do get tired, and some sound and light sensitivity from time to time, but mostly I am over most of my symptoms.
I pray every day and I m praying for your recovery.

Over a year in: I can multi task (limited) and have humor in my life. But when I am tired, I am very tired.

The average dose of SlowMag (Mag 64) is one tablet twice a day.

I'd try and take it with food, as that would minimize any laxative effects. Most people do not get loose with it, but I do so one never knows!

If you take one at night, it will help with sleep too. Once you get into using it for a week or so, you will develop a steady state in the blood and your body will have access to the magnesium for a 24 hr period.

Most people do not need really high doses, but if you feel the need for more, check with your doctor, to make sure your kidneys are working well, etc.

Default overdoing it?

Hello,

I am currently taking Doctor's Best, Magnesium, High Absorption, 100% Chelated. It says on the bottle "Magnesium (elemental) (from 2,000 mg magnesium glycinate/lysinate chelate**) 200 mg 50%
** Amino acid chelate supplied by Albion Advanced Nutrition."

It says to take two pills daily which I have been doing for about a week. Would this seem about right?

I'm also taking L-Glutamine, Fish Oil, Life Enhancement Serene Tranquility Day with 5-HTP daily and sometimes Life Enhancement Serene Tranquility Night with Tryptophan.

If you are not getting "loose stools" with that dose, then it seems fine for you.

Just an update on Epsom lotion.

This was previously available from CVS. They discontinued it which was very disappointing for me.

However a poster on PN here found it newly available from
Morton Salt company.

http://www.walmart.com/search/search...ing.gender=off

We went to WalMart yesterday, and found it there! $5.97 which for the same size bottle, is 1/2 the price of CVS...LOL
Also the formula is very similar minus the capsicum that was listed on the CVS brand.

My blood pressure has really been good since using this every night. I went from 3 strong drugs to lower it, to one small dose of beta blocker! My doctor was astonished!
I apply a small dab on each wrist and inner arms when I go to bed at night. I also use this on my left foot when it swells up. Takes the swelling down overnight.
