Lightbulb Fructose and Gout:

I was in a medical waiting room waiting for my tests today, and they had JAMA on the magazine table.

In it was a large study involving nurses over time, and consumption of sugared drinks, and high sugar intake. What was found was an increase in gout for many of them, esp those at older ages. (included orange juice and other fruit juices as well)

Fructose is 1/2 of sucrose, so sucrose is included.

I looked this up when I returned home and found this similar article on Medscape:

This is another article about men:
http://www.bmj.com/content/336/7639/309.full

The article I saw had a graph of fructose metabolism in the liver, leading to increase serum purine concentration. The JAMA article said the purines start increasing, within an hour of the fructose consumption!

There is an increased focus now on sugar consumption starting with infants who consume quite a bit of sugar in formulas today, leading to obesity, hypertension, lipid dysregulation, etc. This study today adds gout to that disease list.

I'll put that YouTube again, since it is so great. I even saw this video on TV on our local educational channel this weekend!

This explains sugar and fructose in particular in detail.
