Default Folic Acid Maximum Dose?

Helloooo again!

So I'm on this multivitamin (one a day) that has 400mg folic acid in it and a little b12. I take 1000mcg methylcobalamin everyday anyway and used to take 800mg metafolin with the methylcobalamin. Can I do that and safely take the multivitamin too (that would be 1200mg folic acid in total) or would that be way too much?

I looked online but couldn't find much info and my doctor didn't know, so I thought it couldn't hurt to ask here once more!

Ziggy

That should be okay.

But don't go any higher. Some women given high dose folate before and during pregnancy have turned up with colon cancer.

This is preliminary, but really high doses of folate are implicated.

I wouldn't go over 1mg a day. You are close.

Confused Dosage for Folate (As Metafolin)

Mrs. D, I think I saw on here where you recommended taking Folate (as Metafolin) on an empty stomach. I bought Solgar brand 400 MCG. The label says to take one or two per day with a meal. If I take a multi everyday would just one be enough? I also take B12 methylcobalamin, and P-5-P in the morning about an hour before breakfast. I would like to know if I'm doing it right.

Thank you for being there.......Rosie

The folate is not so important as the B12 is.

Folate is easily absorbed in any fashion I believe. The B12 is not so easy. It needs to be taken on an empty stomach. Presence of food may block its absorption orally. People with intact working intrinsic factor probably will absorb better. It is those with poor intrinsic factor who need the empty stomach. Basically if you are here, with low B12, you need the best way to get the most from the oral version. So empty stomach wins as a best case scenario.
