Recently, I began taking 5HTP to boost serotonin levels. I have become jittery and lost sleep last night. Could this be a symptom from 5HTP? I had a traumatic brain injury several years ago and don't react predictably now.

Could be ... I can't tolerate 5-HTP either.
You could try some l-tryptophan. We use it here, but every night, we both reach some plateau, and the jitters start with it too. So I take it once a week now. The tryptophan is much gentler and slower.

What do you think of catnip as a muscle relaxer/sleep aid? Years ago, before the spinal issues required ongoing attention by a physician, I was able to manage with nsaids for inflamation and pain, power walking (endorphins being my drug of choice ), and catnip as a muscle relaxer and sleep aid. Approx. 30 minutes before bedtime, I would make a cup of strong catnip tea. Shortly thereafter, my muscles would be nice and soft, as opposed to a rock hard spasm, and I would feel drowsy. I would awaken in the am refreshed, with no hangover. I would take a cup of tea durring the day, prn, when I would begin to experience serious spasm. The tea would reduce the spasm before it had a chance to peak and put me on the heating pad for the rest of the day. Have a great day.

I've never tried it...
But our old cats sure liked it... In fact our new young ones LOVE it too. Cat nip tea is an old southern US remedy (mostly for stomach ailments in humans). I'll have to research it now! http://www.drugs.com/npc/catnip.html
