Default Taurine and osteoarthritis

The only supplement that I take is taurine (1 g/day). This arose from a series of discussions that I had with mrsD.

Recently I have developed painful osteoarthritis in one shoulder (confirmed by my GP and physiotherapist).

Following a PubMed search I decided to increase my dose to 3 g/day. After about a week (early days) I have noticed some improvement.

There is some background to this here Taurine and inflammatory diseases.

Thank you, Kiwi! Very interesting. I'll let you know if I decide to increase the taurine and if it helps.

It's always good to hear good news and I will get back to my Taurine 1000mg caps and use up the bottle. I have NOT taken any for months.

For me, OA is quite advanced and I'm certain all advanced on right side of body where I had hip replacement in 2010...new parts to the body sure does change so much and that is what happened to me. The recent mess with knee and advanced OA in right foor/ankle. All right sided.

I so fear a knee replacement NOW...more trauma to the body. And we never know how we will weather the surgery.

Things are looking good after two weeks.

I still get rare twinges but have not taken any NSAIDS for a while - a good thing because I dislike chronic use of them.

I got a kilogram of pharmaceutical grade taurine from a local supplier for $A49. That should keep me going for a while. I checked their pharmaceutical grade claim using various instruments that I have access to in my day job - they were right

Caroline, I hope that taurine works for you. Through semi-systematic investigation I have found that taking half my dose in the morning on an empty stomach and the other half in the late afternoon, also on an empty stomach.

I'm not holding my breath about Taurine helping. My knee is over 22 yrs of advancing OA and with this last infection mess and the scoping and cleaning out of the knee they did, it's left my knee pretty damaged. I just started with Black Cumin Seed Oil softgels as it's said to modulate inflammation. I'm sure an ortho would say -- knee replacement. I can't go near a doc or hospital for a couple months as I just came from almost 5 months in hospitals/rehabs for the infection. Glad Taurine is helping you as I'm sure your issue is no where like mine. C

Hi Kiwi
Thank you so much for this information - I'm at the point of desperation after 18 months of increasing leg, lumbar spine and shoulder pain. I'm into week five of going to a private, supposedly 'specialist', back clinic (have given up on the Public Health system here in regard to pain investigation & management - it's under-resourced and overloaded). The private back clinic so far has only covered the basics - mostly stuff I've already been doing for the last 15 years - eg this week's 20 min session was about 'pacing'. I'm reaching the conclusion it's glorified physiotherapy and not much else.

I'm about to place another order with iherb so will look into adding some Taurine for a trial - If it helps with the pain I wonder if NZ customs would let me import future supplies direct from your supplier ? I'll also have to research its compatibility with the glucocorticoids I take for Addison's and I suppose I should run it by the endocrinologist - I've yet to tell them that the Gabapentin they put me on back in April was ineffective - had to give up the 100mg dose after 20 days due to side effects.

Bluesfan, I get my taurine from Bulk Nutrients, based in Tasmania (Bulk Nutrients | We have the biggest range of Australian Manufactured Sport Supplements at the best prices!).

They might know about importing into NZ.
