4 years ago I started taking D3 5000 IU and it caused constipation, so I stopped taking it. A month ago I started taking 1000 IU for a week , then after a week I started taking 2000 IU and it again caused constipation ( this is the third week taking the 2000 IU ) . Anything I can do so I can keep taking it or I'll have to stop again ?

Hi nyuszisue
I take 1 tablet per month of Vit D3 as prescribed for me by my GP. I have no constipation problems (many years). I've never had it confirmed but I'm guessing the body can store Vit. D - hence the once a month tab. The product details are: Brand name: Cal.D.Forte Contains: 1.25mg Colecalciferol BP, Equivalent 50,000 I.U. Vitamin D3 Reading the fine print I see the product is made in NZ (my country) but we have a govt. bulk pharmaceutical supply system here. These details should be enough to ask your PCP if it's available in US. Hope this helps. |

I take oil based softgel D3 and K2 and these do not cause constipation. I take more magnesium than calcium as I've done a LOT of research on this issue and calcium can cause more negative issues than positive...I believe calcium is pushed too much and mag not enough. We need to be optimal with mag for our bone health...deficiency of mag is huge. I'm no doc, but working with healing for 25 yrs alternatively.

Potassium with Magnesium helps too with constipation or any muscle cramping.
Vitamin D deficiency can lead to magnesium deficiency which can block potassium from being absorbed into muscle cells including those in the GI tract. |

Hi nyuszisue, the Mayo Clinic website and livestrong.com both list constipation as a side effect of vitamin D supplementation, so your concern is understandable.
If I were in your position and were deficient in vitamin D (actually I am), I would continue to take the D3 and try to combat the constipation in other ways. I’ve found that a simple power pudding of applesauce, bran, and prune juice has worked for me when needed: http://www.grandmas-wisdom.com/relie...stipation.html When I asked my doctor about possible side effects from D3, he did say that if constipation occurred, it would likely happen regardless of the dosage taken. In other words, it shouldn’t be worse with a 5000 i.u. softgel vs. a 2000 i.u. softgel. I can’t verify whether this is actually true or not, but I just thought I’d pass along the information. |

If one still believes D3 is an issue, take more Vit C thru the day, 500mg a few times a day, but C is so critical for so much of our health systems..... And since the 2 yr+ covid drama, I believe so many would be alive today if they got enough of these 2 vital supplements in their bodies.

It takes some balancing to keep Vit D levels in a good place for Immune System and keep from becoming constipated. I work with the magnesium, extra Vit C, a new product which is a cleanse called Intestinal Movement Formula, and have Psyllium powder on its way..and my trusty cooked prunes. Keeping a balance is important and also being mindful of colon clogging foods like heavy meats.. and drinking warm water thru the day, aim for 8 glasses warm water..

On the D3 and constipation issues, could be something to it. I just got my annual labs and my D3 was a beautiful 98 on a 30-100 lab range, but my sluggish bowel issues persist, ummmm....and I do take a new colon cleanse product so maybe the D has gotten to high for my bowel activity.
