Default Edta

Hello everyone, tonight hubby tells me he is heading to GNC in the morning to buy this stuff he read about on the internet so of course I said "don't buy anything till I ask the people with knowledge here." I also told him about iherb because I think GNC is pricey. Iherb does have it cheaper anyway.

So my question is...is this a good thing for him to take? He is wanting it because his good cholesterol was low and the other was borderline (I think)

Here is the website he was looking at ---

http://www.healthresources.net/eoc/l...ders=#purchase

And here is the iherb page---

http://www.iherb.com/Search.aspx?c=1&kw=edta

So if this is a good thing for him to take which one from iherb do you recoommend? Thanks for all the help and answers I am sure I will get...Sue

humble opinion go to IHerb and click on the letter C they have two herb supplements for cholesterol, both products have 4 stars either one would be good. Forget the either site, with the money saved go out for a fun evening!!It will do both your hearts goodHaving fun is one of the most important things a person can do for their heart. That will be $75.00 Just joking, but I did work in a health food store for two years, so I know a TINY bit about herbs.Carose

Lightbulb not sure....

EDTA is a complexing agent... it is used in heavy metal chelation.

What that means is that it complexes out minerals in the body.
It is also a food additive when used in certain low amounts and approved by FDA as safe in many situations.

What concerns me mostly about chelating, is the good minerals tend to go out with the "bad" ones. And you can then become deficient, esp in critically low ones like chromium and selenium. Zinc can be affected as well, but since we eat foods higher in zinc it is less likely to become low unless you chelate for a long time.

I have very little experience with chelation... so I'd suggest you Google it and read for yourself. It has always been controversial, and a year ago or so a 5yr old autistic boy died as a result of chelation that was too aggressively done.
It stirred up alot of controversy.

So I cannot really say with confidence that EDTA is harmless. Or that it does what you need at the doses available OTC or if there is some other hidden downside to it. If I find anything I will PM you further about it, okay?

Lightbulb Oh, and BTW...

You can raise good cholesterol with fish oil. At least two per day with food.

Thanks Mrs D and Carose, I did read a bunch after "googling" it and I did not think it was something that he really needed. I had already told him about the fish oil from info learned here. I will also go check out the items at iherb and see what those are. Thanks...Sue
