I am bruising very easily so am thinking I need to take vitamin C and doctor said to take calcium due to having ddd and my age of 65. Can you sugest a good source of these vitamins please. I hate to spend money on brands that might not be what they claim and wonder how much of C I should take. Thanks, Gaye

I take high doses of Vitamin C due to a rare Vitamin C defiency and really any brand will do. My doctor gives me a perscription (so the hospital pharmacy will provide it), but the brand they carry varies a lot and its the same stuff you can get over the counter at any grocery or drug store. I am not especially familiar with calcium supplements, but in the past my dr has had me take the generic version of Caltrate--- the version that has Vitamin D include. Supposedly Vitamin D is supposed to help your body absorb the calcium better......

And while you're at it, I hope you will cover the possibility that you need B12.
Some people bruise a lot when deficient. rose

Thanks lovetolaugh and rose. I do remember the doc now that you mention it saying to take calcium with D and I had forgotten.
I had my B tested and they saidit was fine but I still wonder about it. Maybe need to discuss it with new doc. Thanks again, Gaye ![]() |

You will need to inform yourself regarding the B12, because the chance you will find a doc who isn't decades behind are very small. You need to be able to know the difference.

I would definitely use Vit C in a delayed release formula...to get better daily
values (you will excrete it less quickly). I buy mine at Puritan's Pride. Another brand for the Vitamin D that is good is NatureMade..for vitamin D3 that is. At age 65--- in fact starting around 50 (or sooner for some) all people should be taking an oral B12 supplement. This is a new recommendation from NIH among others. There is some evidence that Calcium from foods is better absorbed and utilized. This website is very up-to-date and gives food choices: http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocente...ium/index.html We do alot of yogurt in this house. I like the smoothies by Dannon and Stoneyfield. Start with 500mg of Vit C in delayed formula. Vit C will acidify the urine, and if you take too much it might interfere with some other prescription medication excretion thru the urine. It should be stopped for a few days before any tests for blood sugar as well.
