I am looking for information about enteric coated P5P -- how necessary is it that it be enteric coated? It really drives up the cost.
Thanks for any info! Janet *edit* Last edited by Chemar; 08-28-2010 at 01:19 PM. Reason: NeuroTalk Guidelines |

I should say that I am interested in taking P5P to address symptoms of Pyrroluria or Pyrrole Disorder. The supps are expensive so I ordered the non-coated P5P.
I started out in July taking a B100 complex, 50 mg enteric coated P5P and 50 mg of Zinc Picolinate, as well as 500 mg of Natural Calm Mg Citrate. Within three days I could feel a difference in sleep and felt less anxiety, which had been an increasing problem. I have been under a lot of stress due to unemployment so the idea that taking supplements could do this much for my sleep and building anxiety is amazing to me. I am now to the point, 7 weeks later, of adding a few more supps, gradually, to see how I feel. I have just received my order of Niacinamide, Biotin, Mn, B12 SL and Activated Folate (FloaPro). I have increased sources of Omega 6 in my diet but have not ordered Borage Oil yet, because of the heat. Would love to hear from others who have worked with the Pyrrole Disorder treatment protocols. Thanks, Janet |

NOW brand is very affordably priced. Some large health food stores may carry it, but it is also on iherb.com
I believe acid cleaves the phosphate off...returning the P5P to pyridoxine. I read years ago that one should only take enteric coated ones for that reason. I'll look around later in the week as I just returned from vacation and have 2 cars to unpack!

Thanks, I appreciate any information you might come across. I wonder why there are several non-coated brands if they are ineffective?
I will also ask around and see what I can find out from some of the companies that sell or make the non-coated P5P. Janet |

Supplement makers are common on the internet. Not all are quality or based on current research.
The better companies produce the better products. It will be a week or so before I can get to this subject again. I am sorry, but I have tons to do coming back from the boonies with 2 cars filled with stuff...and 3 cats..and and and....

I’m having a difficult and frustrating time finding what I need – nutrition-wise – and was hoping someone could help. Essentially I’m looking for a low-dose B coenzyme complex (*without* any Pyridoxine), in enteric tablet form. The idea is to complement the P-5-P that I started taking a week ago.
1) I know that P5P is best in enteric coated tablet form. But, what about the rest of the B’s. What is the best form for them? (I’ve heard B12 is best in sublingual form due to its poor absorption.) All the active coenzyme B complex formulas I’ve seen are all in capsule form! 2) If I decide to just forget about the B complex pill – and take them individually, do I need to supplement all 8 B’s, or can I just do some? If just some, which ones are the most important to increase? I am already taking a multi-vitamin which has some amounts (in their crappiest form) of each.
Btw, B Complex formulas, even B-100s, had never noticeably done much for me, other than interfere with a good nights sleep. The difference with P-5-P, however, was like night and day. Like flipping a mood-elevating switch. Fantastic! Thanks, Annette |

Mrs. D,
I had exchanged some messages with you recently in the B-12 thread. Recently I found out that I apparently have Pyroluria. I did a urine test to Bio-Center Lab in Kansas. The range is 1 to 20. My result was 33! I had been off ALL of my vitamins and minerals for 10 days before taking the test. I have an appointment soon with a medical group that has a doctor and a naturopath that work together. They said they know how to treat Pyrolauria, so I hope they can give me some guidance. In the mean time, I got some P5P from the local health food store. It is sublingual, 25mg by Source Naturals. I already take a good B-complex by Pure Encapsulations that has some P5P in it. I take it with breakfast and never had any trouble. A half hour or more before breakfast, I also take my Synthroid and a Methyl B-12 (usually 5000 mg, Jarrow). Anyway, today about an hour after eating a late lunch, I took the sublingual P5P. Two hours later, I felt like I was going to have an anxiety attack. I was glad I had only taken a small dose! As I write this, it is almost 6 hours later and i still feel anxious and am getting a headache. Uugh. I know this will just wear off as time passes. I don't understand why the sublingual P5P gave me anxiety. Should I have taken it WITH the meal? Testing positive for Pyrolauria means that you need more B6, and I've been reading that it should be P5P. Does it need something else to balance it out? The B-complex that I take, which has P5P in it, does not cause any problems for me. Now I'm more confused than ever. I have decided to just take what I normally take and stop "experimenting" until I see this new doctor and naturopath. I'm wondering if perhaps a test score of 33 is the "improved good" result of having taken decent B vitamins. Maybe the extra P5P is just too much for me? By the way, a recent blood test revealed that my B-6 level is perfectly within range. But the people on the Pyrolauria message board say that sometimes that is meaningless, because although it is in the blood, my body can't utilize it properly. |

The best P5P to take is enteric coated (oral swallow).
NOW makes it. iherb.com carries it and it is not expensive. I don't know how the sublingual works. Pyrolurics also need zinc. Blood work for B6 is rather useless IMO. It only shows what is in the serum and does not separate out pyridoxine from pyridoxal. The SpectraCell type labs test the intracellular levels of various nutrients, and they may be a better indicator of levels. Nothing is happening when nutrients are floating around in the serum, except they are getting excreted by the kidneys. People with Pyroluria have anxiety issues anyway. It would take time for any sublingual B6 to get to the various sites and insert itself to work. It is very difficult to interpret your reactions when the Pyroluria is causing anxiety itself.

Thank you for your reply. Can you tell me a little more about the SpectraCell type labs test? Would my doctor order this, or is it something I can order myself? Is it a blood test or something else (saliva, hair)?
Thank you! Quote:
