Default Spurlina? Can anyone tell me about it?

I'd never heard of it before today, and it seems on the surface to be a nutrient and protein packed sort of algae?
I admit I've been sort of lazy in my web search but it seems as if the medical professions' jury is kind of 'out' on it, while others are avid advocates.
I've a friend w/cancer [all the bad kinds] who needs nutritions and hasn't been able to keep much down and it seems as if pills [something she can keep down] mite help...
If anyone here is truly up-to-date on this stuff with the real facts, I'd appreciate it.
