hi
omega 3 plus Thiamin, thiamin monophosphate, ascorbic acid, and folic acid cant hurt to take them Thiamin, thiamin monophosphate, ascorbic acid, and folic acid were determined in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in 31 outpatients who underwent a myelography because of back-pain. All subjects were otherwise healthy. The CSF concentration (mean +/- SD) was 8.6 +/- 3.9 nmol thiamin/L, 16.9 +/- 8.3 nmol thiamin monophosphate/L, 133 +/- 58.8 mumol ascorbic acid/L, and 44.9 +/- 13.2 nmol folic acid/L. The CSF- serum ratio was 2.1 +/- 0.8 for thiamin, 8.3 +/- 4.3 for thiamin monophosphate, 3.0 +/- 1.4 for ascorbic acid, and 3.3 +/- 0.8 for folic acid; the amount in CSF was significantly higher than in serum for each compound. These results support the existence of a saturated transport mechanism of water-soluble vitamins from serum into CSF for thiamin monophosphate, ascorbic acid, and folic acid. However, low CSF concentrations are correlated with low serum concentrations for the three vitamins. High serum concentrations should therefore be advocated to ensure high CSF concentrations.

I believe was to show an active transport process in the CSF.
It does not say, that all people should keep high blood concentrations. There are two basic ways things move around inside the body. 1) passive diffusion-- which means things from high concentration move automatically to lower 2) active transport-- which means something is capable of being moved and concentrated. Is there more to this article? When putting up articles like this it is best to "quote" them, and then provide the link. From PubMed the link # is at the bottom of the abstract as well, and it is a good idea to include that.

hi I leak CSF so I just dropped this here thought it maybe of interest to you guys CSF is such an important part of our make up the fact that the concentrations of these vitamins is higher in the CSF and the article suggests that the elements need to be high in the blood, to archive this I think is valid point so for us who are leaking it it can only help the csf board here is a joke and I am not aloud to give links to ??? I will see if I can find it again and add it I tend to post how I feel with no intention to mislead http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/abstract/56/3/559
kind regards Vini

vini, giving links to other forums in the intent to get our member or "lukers" to go there is not allowed. we are building nt. not here as a spot for advertising other forums. pm'ing links and posting to links to other forums isn't going to do nt any good. i'm sorry you feel the need to post links to other forums and not help to build the csf forum here.

I think the language in foreign papers can be poorly chosen. ( I have seen poorly worded Russian papers, for example).
What that paper is saying is that the active transporter in the CSF will not work if the blood levels of the nutrients are poor. It does not necessarily mean that ADEQUATE blood levels won't work. I think that the word "high" is being misused. I think they meant adequate. Just my opinion. There are many nutrients in CSF..B12, and others: like this: http://www.jacn.org/cgi/content/abstract/23/3/233 Having a CSF leak over a long period of time, has to be very hard on the patient, for many reasons!

we don't pick and choose where google adsense places it ads. forums that place ads, also choose the keywords of the ads it wants placed.
not a double standard at all. we don't place ads on specific forums. members posting links to forums are doing just that. advertising for those forums. it takes time for all forums to build. a weekly check in thread helps. people subcribing to the threads they post on too. people will join many forums all at the same time. ask the very same question, then forget where they posted.

The B12 thing is more complex than foods.
For example, people begin with age to not break B12 out of meats and other animal sources well, because of low stomach acid or lack of intrinsic factor (which normally carries the minute microgram B12 around). It is suggested by NIH (this is on the net at their website) that people 50 and over take a separate high dose B12 supplement. Those of us here for years...have used 1mg methylcobalamin which is the activated form of B12. Many other vitamins use the synthetic version called cyanocobalamin, and some people fail in being able to convert this to methyl form which is the only form your body can use effectively. Also B12 supplements should be taken on an empty stomach. Only a tiny amount from that 1mg (1000 mcg) will be absorbed as a rule. Some neuro problems have been discovered to show low B12 in CSF. (Fibromyalgia and multiple sclerosis)
