I am a fan of Dr Weil and just wanted to get opinions on what are the best brands for Omega 3 fish oils. Obviously highest rated with purest ingredients.
I take around 1800 or so mg, as I need to bring down inflammation as well as just keep up the health, so if y'all have brands to recommend, I would appreciate it. thanks.

Hi Jess... This subject comes up now and then..

The way the oils are processed, removed from the fish bodies
removes heavy metals etc. I believe that there are about 20 steps involved, so this complex task does not have many places that do it. A while back consumerlab.com tested over 15 oils and all passed.

Today, the question becomes which type of oil should I use?
We have today, concentrated oils (double strength).
We have oils enteric coated for reducing fishy burps.
We have oils that have much more EPA to DHA ratio.
We have oils that have more DHA to EPA ratio.
We have DHA only oils.
We have EPA/DHA vegetarian.
We have an RX Fish oil called Lovaza.

Both SAMs Club and Costco sell enteric coated double strength
capsules reasonably priced. This is what we use.

OmegaBrite has higher EPA ratio...which is the anti-inflammatory portion and was originally made for bipolar studies and now for bipolar patients to use. It is only available on the net.

The Vegetarian EPA/DHA has a very LOW amount of EPA in it, so would not be a good choice for you. You want the EPA portion mostly.

NatureMade makes one. Many good companies make them now.
If you stay with a well known company that is better.

You do not want to use Cod Liver oil. It is mostly A and D with a small amount of EPA/DHA. You cannot safely increase dosing with this. Some health food places with poorly trained or untrained sales people push this, so don't fall for their pitches.

Take the oil with food. And divide up the capsules if you take more than one. You can start at one a day until you get used to the GI effects, and increase. For good anti-inflammatory effects you need at least 3 regular strength or two double strength ones daily. The enteric coated type reduce complaints of burping. I have found that the more burping indicates poor stomach status, and with time it corrects itself and goes away, if you get it at all.

It seems like a good ratio for the Nature Made, higher value of EPA and a good price. Omega-3 (EPA) Eicosapentaenoic Acid 432 mg - ,
--Omega-3 (DHA) Docosahexaenoic Acid 288 mg - .

I like the Omega Brite, but don't you want a fairer amount of DHA ? Seems kinda low. 350mg of EPA and 50mg of DHA

I know marketing plays a role in price too... but your thoughts?

DHA is important for the structure in the brain. It is the main fatty acid for pregnant and nursing women. (for the growth of the brain of the child).

I am not sure that it is so essential for the nerves already there however, in the periphery. I searched a bit and found only

But you know, it is up to you. NatureMade is sold at Costco, but I don't recall if they have the Fish oil (they sell their own brand for that) . Also KMart has it...so when they have buy one get one free, you can save alot of money. Which ever outlet you choose, join on their website for points. For that big Fish oil you should get about 100 pts or so.
At the 500 mark they send you a $7 coupon. There is an 8 digit code on each bottle. Don't throw it away before writing it down.
I've saved a bundle this way. I got a full year's supply of their Flax oil, buy one get one free at Kmart and used the $7 coupon besides! all for $7.98! They have a great customer phone service, which I have used at times for information.

This is not a big issue for you. If you were pregnant, you would want more DHA...however. Regular fish oil should work for you.
It is less costly than OmegaBrite anyway. The company OmegaBrite is owned by Dr. Stoll's wife, and he has a book out about his studies with high EPA fish oil and Bipolar treatment and psychiatry in general. He used this product in his studies.

I've heard many people like Carlson's brand.
This is what is often recommended at our local health food store.
I've heard parents recommend the OmegaBrite for their children with special needs...particularly ADHD and Bipolar Illness.
