I have used SAMe for about 10 yrs. I just stopped as an experiment.

My husband and son tried it...my son actually has tried 3 times.
It makes him very anxious and irritable.

I think it depends on what your neurotransmitter systems are doing now. Everyone is slightly different. Some people tend to have more of one thing than another.

I will tell you what my son DOES like and that is l-theanine. He says it calms his anxiety very well. He uses SunTheanine.

I used SAMe for my arthritis, and also for some mental clarity, while I was going thru menopause. It was very energizing for me. It helps with depression, and fatigue. But I did have insomnia for a few short months, when I started it.

I personally don't think SAMe is a good intervention for anxiety.

Three in the family have tried SAM-e (S-adenosyl-methionine), one with excellent results. None had side-effects.

I've just been reading about it in several books! It helps mitochondrial function and is thus involved in energy production using B vitamins and some other nutrients.

It is being mentioned in the book "It's Not Mental" (see http://www.itsnotmental.com) and "Fix the Broken Brain" and such.

The mention in "It's not Mental" had some B vitamins mentioned as being used with it and the idea about looking into http://www.lef.org for information, medical doctor consults (free) and protocols. The package says it should not be taken by those diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I've seen that warning on many products used with bipolar disorder. Years ago, I recall seeing that same warning on Melatonin.

Different people need different supplements depending on what the underlying physiological issues are.

It is a shame so few doctors are knowledgable.

I recently went and seen a Dr. Amens clinics in California. AMAZING clininc. The guy who runs it has 7 other clinics and in the last year recently went on Dr. OZ , Dr. Phil, And Oprah. I trust his ppls suggestions and they suggested Gaba but take SamE with it. Heres the thing i recently finally got the money to get a 3mth supply of both of these items and at gnc the samE cost $38..HOLLY CRAP...If i go on the 1st week of the mth all customers with a membership get 20% off. Thats still only $30 and i can not really afford that. Any suggestions??

Target's "Origin" brand of samE may be a more affordable option
