Does anyone here know what might be good for BAD stomach bloating and distention? Also, what might be the cause?
I take meds for high blood pressure and migraine prevention. I take a fair amount of vitamins/supplements...fish oil, multi, D3, magnesium, B50, B12, etc. Today, I picked up something from the store called Pearls and Beano. Anyone have any ideas? Natural products? What else? I am uncomfortable. Going in for a colonoscopy in three weeks. Need some possible relief ideas asap. Many thanks. |

Well I started with this several years ago, and finally discovered last summer it was from FRUCTOSE.
Cutting out all sugars, stopped it cold. I had all kinds of tests, all negative. Turns out after reading up on this, fructose intolerance is pretty common. If you have problems with apple juice, I'd suspect it first. (I could NEVER tolerate apple juice all my life). But I also do Beano and Lactaid milk (or enzyme for other dairy)now. Bloating can also be gall bladder. Or a food borne illness. It is hard to figure out sometimes. Mine was getting pretty painful and extreme.

TY Mrs. D...I see you can relate. Yes, "painful and extensive."
I realized the other day that sugars were an issue. Two days ago, I had a MENTOS candy (I think ...not sure...it was 'sugar free") and looked RIDICULOUS. My stomach blew up so big, I'm worried about stretch marks. Then, the other day, I had some pudding...OMG! DH and I went out recently, people were smiling at us. I think they thought I was PREGNANT. Can you OD on Beano? What are gall bladder symptoms? Why would it all of a sudden get WORSE? I already do Lactaid Milk. I'm so disturbed by this...I am sitting here in my exercise and sweat pants....wow....this is UNREAL. |

I don't know what sets it off... getting older I guess.
Gall bladder issues create gas, because bile flow is reduced and that upsets digestion. There is also the scary effect of ovarian cancer. It is supposed to do that too. My bloating was higher up however. I only use one Beano before I have salads, onions, and veggies. Some things still set me off... cabbage for one. (I can tolerate small amounts raw in a salad...with Beano). But any sauerkraut or large amounts of cooked cabbage, are terrible. Another thing is hummus from chick peas. I had an attack from them where I thought I'd "die"... I love fresh hummus, but I won't be doing it ever again!

You may want to check into gluten intolerance. It's possible that Beano is aggravating the problem, not everyone can use Beano. Maybe you need to be dairy free, casein may be the problem, not just lactose. Check into elimination diet, sometimes people have very good luck with these.

Thank you Pabb and Dar.
Mrs. D...I stopped drinking apple juice years ago...some bloating w/ it...cabbage as well. I'm getting concerned that I'm reducing my list of foods to eat...however...not eating sweets/junk would be a GREAT thing...I'm thinking of it as a message from above. The odd thing is that I've had minor issues w/ these things before and all of a sudden...it's over the top. It seems dairy and sugar are the big culprits. I've gotten improvement with a priobotic tablet, a large dosage simethicone tablet and beano. I see the gastro person in 3 weeks for the "procedure" -YIKES-and will talk with her some more about these things. Don't know much about casein...will look into it... it "feel" like an allergic reaction...this is for sure. |

I tried digestive enzymes back when I had my "problem"...I used a product from NOW that was high in bile salts.
It didn't work well. It wasn't until I had the sorbitol attack last summer, when I really stopped eating just about everything, except crackers and chicken soup, that I discovered the link to fructose. It was a Gatorade that set me off. I've cut out all fructose. No fruit juices, no jams or jelly, no cookies, cakes, etc. I found I could have an orange now and then, but not bananas or cherries. Fructose on an empty stomach works faster than after a meal. The only candy I do now is a small bit of dark chocolate now and then. A small amount of sucrose is okay for me after a meal. But even a small amount of sucrose in my morning tea was setting me off on an empty stomach. So I use Splenda now. If you Google Fructose intolerance you will find alot of interesting data. It is quite common, and some people now believe it causes IBS in some patients. I have found some very low carb yogurts. One is Kroger's Carbmaster. So far I do about 3 or 4 yogurts a week, all LITE or Carbmaster type, without a problem. One thing I have to say goodbye to is Campbell's tomato soup...it has high fructose corn syrup in it. Also Ketchup sets me off now. Most BBQ sauces have alot of sugar too. Jack Daniel's #7, I can tolerate, but no more honey types! I have wondered if it was a Candida reaction. I haven't had testing for that. It was hard at first. But now I don't really miss the sugars. I didn't eat alot of sweets anyway. It will be more challenging on vacation this year, as food storage and available alternate things is much more limited up there, than here in the city. But I still have my gall bladder...it came very close to the knife!

Oh yes I have the kangaroo pooch I call it. It also comes with pressure and stomach noises. I have IBS with C. I wonder if you may. Some foods like other stated are a no for me such as beans but even some veggies you need to look at that are hard to diegst. I have had this pre ed since a teen. I also think eating smaller more frequent meals can help.
Mrs D I wish I could work on my sugars and I know in the long run I would feel better but in the short run it is so hard. Hopefully if one sees benefits that can make it easier of course |
