Ok, I have always wondered this but never had a place to ask.
If I eat 6 doughnuts in one sitting or even though out the day....will this have the SAME medical & weight gain result as if I were to eat the same 6 in a 6 week or month period of time? 1 doughnut a month for 6 months of 6 in 1 day? Also the same with butter. Can I induldge in one bagel with tons of butter once a month, or small amounts everyday to = same amount? I want to know REAL answers such as if I will gain the same amount of weight? Raise my chol. levels & such.. Sorry, but \i am full of weird questions |

I don't know the answer but I just had a blueberry bagel that was slathered with real butter and it put a big smile on my face. *grin

If they are using the new esterified fats, your blood sugar would be severely impacted. High blood sugar stimulates insulin which puts the extra calories in your belly fat. So too much at once is very bad...in many ways. A bit of butter now and then is not thought to be an issue anymore. There are new spreads, like Smart Balance and Olivio that taste just like butter. You'd be amazed and they have omega-3s in them.

Suggestion for healthy weight gain:
indulgent Smoothies: Whey Protein Flax oil w/ Fruit of your choice w/Ice cream Flavoring if desired (chocolate etc) You get fiber, good fats, protein/amino acids, antioxidants and calories. Be advised tho that really high caloric intake in one sitting if you are older, will make insulin resistance worse. To gain weight, smaller more frequent eating may accomplish more without this risk.

Some people just have a really high metabolism.
If you are eating normal amounts of food, but still super thin maybe a thyroid or possibly even a hormone check is in order?

Yummmm, that shake sounds good mrsD. Will give it a try for sure!
Jo*mar, yes, it is probably hormone, but have no time or way to get tested...I'm at "that" age....Actually, this was never an issue before my accident in "99". I went from 120 lb muscle tone to 90 lb. weakling. Stayed alive on Snickers for awhile. It was the only thing my body would hold on to. But now I have become much healthier & stronger & can manage to stay up to 110, but it seems like I have to eat all day to keep up. I have gotten to the point where Nothing taste good, or just no appetite....I Feel good at 120. Look a whole lot better too. If it's hormones, that will work itself out on it's own? Or should I be seeing yet another Doc? Thyroid could be, but I belong to the Military...They don't help much. I do know that if I do work in the yard, sometimes I get so shakey that I have to come in and eat everything in sight! Like an animal..lol....But I think that's more of a low blood sugar thingy? |

mrsD might have more ideas on the blood sugar, hormone & thyroid stuff, it just popped into my head when i read this part.
"It's just also hard to be a scrawny looking " How many hrs after you eat and go work outside do you usually get the shakes? If i eat a breakfast of eggs, potatoes and coffee or some leftover dinner i can work outside for about 6 hrs b

I used to just get up & o before eating, but quickly learned that was not working! So now I eat usually a Very large bowl of all organic cereals, I mix them together & enough milk to cover. I wait about 20 minutes before doing work. Sometimes it's ok, others, not so good.
I do take my blood sugar once in awhile & it's on the low side. I hate poking my fingers & usually wait until I prick myself outside on something..lol |

sorry my keyboard quit working on that last post -
I was going to add -I might get the shakes after 6 hrs. milk & cereals alone do not stick with me at all - hot or cold - 2-3 hrs and I am wimpy, shaky & my brain gets foggy . Plus I think I am a bit lactose intolerant now or just a sensitive tummy sometimes. Have you ever looked at that "eat right for your blood type" book? It's kind of interesting you can find it in libraries. Some of it fit for me and explained why some foods were problem causers for me. I don't follow the plan - just used some ideas from it.
