I finally got one put in.

Scenario: Never had children. Never been pregnant. Can't take the pill, dreadful migraines. Can't have the depo shot, Trigeminal Neuralgia attacks.

So the IUD was the last ditch effort.

It was VERY VERY painful (and I have a high pain threshold) being inserted. I nearly fainted, and I'd followed instructions the night before and used the medication to soften the cervix for the doctor. Still, I literally gasped when they inserted it.

After that, cramps bad for 2 days.

Since? Never been happier... thus far!

It's only been 2 months. So far, headaches aren't existent. YAY! My cycle's totally nuts now (ie: more bleeding than normal, longer, more frequent periods) but my gyno assured me that this will sort itself out eventually.

Otherwise, boyfriend can't feel the IUD, I don't have to worry about taking a pill, and I'm not being fed headache meds in a hospital. So overall, I'd say a success!

Only downside, I'm getting more acne than usual. I'm hoping this sorts out too.

We fitted a lot of IUDs when I worked in a Ob & Gyn doctor's surgery, and the main side effects the ladies reported were as you described.... heavier menses and for some, increased monthly cramping.

Almost all side effects settled down, and none reported their partners being able to feel the device. You however should check that the tail is in place from time to time.

You know, they need a male birth control pill. How far off is that anyway? Who cares if he feels it, look at what you've gone through thus far? Criminy, what we women go through so that they don't have to think about birth control.

But you're absolutely right, he's not the one that has to manage birth control options so it doesn't matter if he can/can't feel it. Just threw that in there in case some may be wondering if it can be detected/noticed by the partner.

I had mirena inserted on March 20, 2012. It was very painful however, once the procedure (took ten minutes) was over the pain subsided significantly.
Now I did have very SLIGHT spotting for a couple of days but no actual bleeding until my regular period started on April 2, 2012.
I have had the WORST cramping on and off for the last 5 days and I don't know if this is normal. Usually my cramps before mirena would put me on my sofa or in the bathroom doubled over in agony for the first two days.
My doctor said the mirena would help with my pain on top of giving me lighter periods after my body adjusted to it.
I'm just worried that something is wrong with the placement or Im rejecting it, maybe it's trying to come out. The pain is not consistent it comes and goes like a contraction but when it comes it brings me to tears and it's unbearbable, but when it eases I feel completely fine until the next episode comes. Does anybody have any input or someone has maybe had this problem? I can't see my doctor until May 15 which is a month away and I don't want to overreact if it is just my body getting used to the new birth control.
