Hello all, My name is Laura and I am having major pain in my groin. I went to the Med Express in my area and they told me that I had a pulled muscle. They did not do any tests to find this out, she just told me that was most likely what it was.
It started last week about 5 days ago. I cannot pinpoint how it even happened. Just woke up one morning and there it was. The pain starts in the groin area. There is a lot of times when the pain will go from the groin area and circle around to the front of my leg. Just last night, I noticed that the skin in the front of my knee is numb, which I thought was weird. Bur this morning, the pain in the front of my leg and knee are a lot more painful than the previous days. The pain in my groin tends to throb from time to time. The pain is much worse when I am standing still. I am able to wall normally with the pain. On a scale of 1 to 10, the pains has been as high as a 8 or 9 when standing. When sitting the pain is between a 1 and 4. If anyone knows what this could possible be I would be so grateful. I cannot afford to keep going to the Dr for them to tell me that it is a pulled muscle and take an anti inflammatory. I would rather have a little idea and go to a Dr that will actually help me. I am scared of any type of medicine that is habit forming, so I need to find a way to fix this without really strong meds. |

Do you mind telling me how old you are? A tendon strain can happen, and not manifest for a while. I fell on my left knee years ago...but a month later the ligaments on my adductor muscle flared up. They were strained and I continued to work and stand. Did they tell you to ice the area? That will calm down nerves that may be pinched with inflammation. Pain in the hip may refer to this location as well. If icing 2 or 3 times a day and some anti-inflammatories do not work, then you'll have to have further examination. possiblities include: 1) Hip joint (have you taken steroids lately?--this can cause necrosis of the hip joint) 2) strain of the ligaments holding the hip, or the adductor muscle that goes from the groin connecting to the pelvis, to the inner knee 3) Some inflammation or hernia in the lower pelvis. In females this can include the ovary. Many strains heal up ...but they are not fast in this regard. I had to go to physical therapy for ultrasound and Ifc treatments for mine.

Sure, I am 36 years old. I also have been diagnosed a long time ago with a mild postier bulging disk. I am wondering if the disk could have collapsed and pinching a nerve. I am going to have to go get a MRI or something.

There are two possibilities with steroids...
The necrosis of the head of the femur is less common (with steroids, but it can happen). But when a person stops the steroids, often a lingering hidden problem resurfaces and can hurt like the dickens! This would indicate some potential problem in the hip. Here is a hip site for examples: http://www.aafp.org/afp/2000/0401/p2109.html Women can also damage the leg nerves in childbirth.

Welcome to Neruo Talk. You will find alot of support here. I am sorry to hear that this pain in your groin and leg is so bad. Mrs.D really did have some good ideas. If this dosn't get better, you really should go see a primary care specialist. If you can, keep a journal of everything that is happening to you. It will help if you do have to go in to another physician. I do wish you speedy resolution to your pain. Again welcome to NT. ginnie

Thank you everyone. I went back to the Dr today cause I just could not take it anymore. They told me that I have a compressed nerve in my left groin area. So on top of having a strained muscle, I have nerve issues as well. They just told me to rest and do some stretching. They gave me a muscle relaxer to see if it would give me some relief. It seemed to help a little, but still hurting. I guess I am going to have to just rest and take better care of myself.

You should try icing that area 2 or 3 times a day.
Do not put heat on it yet, and that will make nerve pain worse.

Thank you. I have been putting the heating pad on it and noticed that when I take the heating pad off and stand up, the pain was bad. So, I will start just putting ice on it for a few days.

Use cold treatments like ICE carefully... put a thin cloth between you and the ice pack and only do 20 minutes or so at a time.
2 or 3 times a day. Too much ice, or too much heat will damage things. My chiropractor warned me about heat and over stimulating nerves. I only use a heating pad now for stomach cramping or gall bladder issues. All muscle/joint treatments I do now are cold packs.
