Default Help with UTI Please

Hi everyone,
New to this forum and very desperate for some advice. I have been suffering recurrent utis for 15 years now. The latest tests have shown that I'm pretty much resistant to every single oral antibiotics available to treat utis. As a result, I have spent the last 5 days in hospital receiving intravenous Gentamicin (hospital prescribed only antiobiotics) injections. I'm also taking Augmentin Duo Forte. I should mention that I was in hospital 12 years ago with a severe case of Pyelonephritis (uti infection which caused renal abscess on my right kidney).

I have been sent home from the hospital but I'm not feeling any better. I still have strong urge to pee even though there's not a lot. I'm also experiencing pain in my back, just above the kidney region.

Has anyone gone through something similar and can offer any type of advice? I've also had a CT Scan but nothing abnormal is showing. Should I see a urologist? I'm really at my wit's end in battling with this disease...

Thanks.

Was the back pain there when they discharged you form hospital?
If not I would call dr and let them know about it.

Since this has been a long time ongoing thing have you considered a naturopathic doctor?
You could have some underlying food sensitivities that are setting your body up for these recurring infections.

Especially if no anatomical or other physical reasons are showing up.

Hi Jo*mar,
Yes the back pain was there although I informed the doctor that it was not as intense as when I went in on Monday (I could not even stand up at that stage).

I have never been to a naturopath before but maybe it'll be worth while? The specialist said he just wanted to get the bacteria infection under control before we talk about preventative actions. To him, it means taking Macrodantin (another antibiotic) daily possibly for an indefinite period of time. This is not something I'd prefer. I have read about D'Mannose being good for treating ongoing UTIs but not available in Australia.

Thanks for your reply and the link - I'll check it out now.

Ugh. I feel for you. Kidney pain like that is just shocking.

My daughter has suffered with recurrent UTIs for some years although her problems have been due to anatomical abnormalities mostly. She's only got one kidney and ureter now but has a mega-ureter so urine pools in that area and often will reflux back up into the kidney. She also doesn't really feel the urge to urinate which causes more problems. During one episode she ended up with septicemia. That was when she had both kidneys. They ended up stenting one kidney but it didn't take. Long story...

She has her own testing strips now but still that means that if she's got some sort of infection they feed her antibiotics which is not ideal but otherwise it's difficult to treat and because she's only got the one kidney she needs to keep it.

You could try Cranberry juice in your daily diet or the tablets which you can get at the Health Food Store. Probably supermarkets as well these days.

There's also the urine neutralizer which she's been given from time to time. Ural. That just tends to stop burning and it's a good idea to talk with doctor before using that.

I'm surprised they've sent you home while you still have that pain. Sounds as if you've still got an infection. Drink LOTS of water and when you do pee, make sure you really empty your bladder. Might be difficult while you have this frequency feeling.

It's a real worry to be home on the weekend still feeling so sick. If that pain persists I'd be going back to the hospital or doctor asap!

Do you have a fever still???

Hi Lara,
Thanks for your reply and sorry to hear what your daughter had to go through - UTIs often aren't seen as serious issues (most women will experience it some time in their life) until it means serious kidney infections. The specialist said if we can't get this under control then as a last resort we may be looking at removing the offending kidney... hopefully that is the very last resort.

I've bought cranberry juice (Oceanspray - can't seem to find 100% pure cranberry juice) and have also tried Ural. I don't have a fever at the moment but I'm monitoring it very closely.

My specialist is a nephrologist but I'm thinking that because my kidney infection is ALWAYS triggered by a bout of UTI that perhaps I should look to make an appointment with a Urologist who would be looking for different things then a kidney specialist. I'm willing to give just about anything a go at the moment...

Good you have no fever. That's what you need to monitor.
Hope you have a pain free evening and night.

Serious kidney infections can be life-threatening.

My daughter's specialist in Brisbane actually specialises in paediatric urology, reconstructive urology and stone disease. His card says he's a Urologist. He still sees her when needed even though she's 23 now. She still needs to have her remaining ureter reconstructed one day, some day. Fortunately for her, her remaining kidney although a strange shape does function well.

I know what you mean about the sugar content in the Cranberry juice. Sort of defeats the purpose doesn't it? You could try the capsules instead.

btw, Some members here are very impressed with a product called Kefir. It's a probiotic. I haven't looked for it myself yet, but I would imagine it's in health food stores. I've seen mention of it in some discussion places regarding UTIs but have no idea if it can help as a preventative. One of our members, mrsD, may be able to comment on that some time.

take care of yourself.

Default Hi There

I get UTIs at the drop of a hat. With that in mind I daily take plenty of cranberry capsule, vit. C and drink lots of water. If I discontinue that plan, I get a major UTI within a week. Oh, I think the pro-biotics that I take for ongoing thrush is helpful with the UTIs. Often times, when I went to my primary doc with UTI symptoms, the tests revealed candidas in the bladder, not a bacterial infection. Best wishes.
