i think part of the purpose of this thread has gotten lost. this is not to get you to go get a mammogram, but to do your own monthly self exam. the link i gave shows you how. mammogram are a once a year or long thing, unless you have a family history of breast cancer. but even if you get one...you still need to examine your breasts monthly. doing your own exam will teach you to spot any changes early. you can do an examine 5 minutes...hehehe..or less depending on size right in the shower. </IMG>

I lost my mom Sep 24, 2007 to breast cancer that had met to the liver.
She got a yearly mamogram faithfully. May 04 she had her annual mamogram. Nov 04 she found a lump. She went in and it was cancer. When we met with the surgeon we took her mamogram films in (the report said she was clear). The surgeon pointed to the film and said there it is right there. They had misread her mamogram. Here is what we have learned: Insist that your FILMS be sent to your doctor and ask the question "has this been compared to my last year's mamogram?". First, this gives a second pair of eyes to look at the film. Second, you have an estabilished relationship with your doctor because you chose him or her. Let's face it. People pay more attention to relationships over films. YOUR doctor is going to be more careful than someone who simply looks at film all day. Finally, think about our neuros. I know my neuro looks at every film I have done and compares it to the written report. Why would we expect any less from our ob/gyn? |

Also, they make machines that are a little more friendly for the less-than-blessed ladies, however, the accuracy isn't as high and it's really painful (requires a lot of pulling ). An ultrasound is what I have done now to monitor mine, the poor lil fellers just don't have the elasticity to work well with the regular machines. It's quite difficult having smaller hooties to feel lumps as I thought mine was one of my ribs (it fell between them). I have to exam myself in various awkward positions; standing up, laying on back, laying on left side, laying on right, etc. Anyway, check the boobies cancer doesn't seem to care about their size!! Oh, also - the one I had removed did NOT show up on a mammogram, it was my gyn who did confirm the lump and ordered an ultrasound after seeing the mammogram was clear (as he was sure it was not clear).
