Default Calcification?

Hi there,
I had my first mammogram last week. A nurse called with the results today and informed me that I have calcifications in both breasts. What the...?!?! The nurse explained to me that these may simply be attributed to normal aging, especially after having children -- though a very small percentage of these may indeed be cancerous. She also assured me that since I have no family history and because the calcifications are in BOTH breasts, the odds of not having the pre-cancerous kind is in my favor. And the fact that this is my first, meaning that nothing else is on file for me for comparison, is all the more reason for their wanting to take more pictures. But regardless of what she said, I'm still scared...

Anyone else have further info/experiences that may help ease my mind at this point? What I'm really wondering is this -- any chance that this can be an adverse event to a drug and/or possibly related to a CNS problem??

Thanks so much.

Hi! I'm sorry I didn't see this B4 now. I had a mammo about 5 yrs ago and they said it was normal. She said I had some calcifications, but that they were benign and that many women get them as they age.

She also said that w/the new CAD screening, that the Radiologist can tell the bad from the good.

If your'e still wary of it, talk to your Dr, not the nurse. Take care and let us know how your'e doing.

Hi!

I just had my second mammogram; I had my first one 15 years ago.

I know I shouldn't put things off and I think that's why my son is an only child; just never got around to having any more kids!

Anyhow; they found a bunch of calcifications in Sara (right) but Susan (left) was fine but they wanted me to see a surgeon!!

She did an exam and I had an ultrasound done and both girls are fine. Sara does have a lot of small calcifications. The Doc said they were normal because of aging so I guess she is telling me I am old and lumpy!

Oh Janie, you do make me laugh!

I too had calcification in one breast after being called back from a mammogram. I had the area surgically removed as it was too difficult to biopsy because of it's position.

I'm not on any of the DMDs or any other medication that could predispose to this. I guess we ladies who've had them, are just plain lucky!

I'm about due again for my next one, but I'm not worried at all.

Hi all with calcifications
I have some also, but mine are in the brain settled in a tumour which has been there for sometime, not the calsifications though, mine are new to me.
Think maybe it`s time i had another mammo. not had one for 6 yrs.
there is a possibility that my kind of tumour could be linked to breast cancer
so you`v all given me the move to get one done. A big big thankyou.

not a young chick, very old one quite tough

Once you turn 50 in Australia, mammograms are free and they suggest you have one every 2 years.

Under 50 years old, I believe it's a case of requesting referral from one's doctor, unless there's reason to suspect there may be a problem.

If yee women out there are over 50 and have NOT had a mammogram yet.....get thee to thy doctor's to arrange one, post haste!!

It only takes a few minutes......and they do squash all shapes and sizes into said mammogram machine......

It doesn't hurt, but it can be a tad uncomfortable, but at least knowing you don't have breast cancer should be worth a little discomfort....surely!

Here endeth today's lecture......!!

Free mammograms; what a country! That would hurt less in the wallet anyhow!

I always wondered; what if the electricity went off just when the paddles closed!!

This is such an old thread but thought maybe someone want to discuss this now. We're talking about breast calcifications on another group and I had 2 mammograms in my early 50's and calcifications showed up. At that time in my life I was taking supplemental calcium and put the blame there. Lots of info out there on this issue.

I went on to do more searching and found how necessary magnesium is for bone health, more so than calcium. So I stopped most calcium supps and ate some dairy products but bumped up magnesium.

That was about 30 yrs ago and never had another mammogram and have my regime for breast health and to my knowledge my breasts are just fine at almost 82. I think those mammograms are barbaric anyway. Make comments if this hits home.
