I heard something on the noon broadcast about Fosamax causing a higher percentage of women to have heart attacks. I couldn't find anything recent in the Health News forum. Anyone else hear about this?
I'm calling my dr. because I have taken it for years and years.

Thanks for the insight. My aunt takes Fosamax and she actually developed osteonecrosis of the jaw.

Oh good grief! For years and years I've been taking 70 mg Fosamax (mine comes 4 expensive tablets per month in a little cardboard envelope, not a jar.) and I haven't heard a word about this.
I started taking it because my epilepsy drugs caused fairly severe osteoprosis. Fosamax repaired that in just a couple of years and I've just loved the stuff. I've never even thought about stopping it. Next appt. I'll ask my Dr. about it too. Alffe - I'm always thanking you -- here I go again .... Thank You, Alffe. |

Mine comes in the same little cardboard container that is impossible to open without scissors... and it's 70 mg w/Vit.D. And I am going to take a break from taking it!
Today however, a little cardboard box arrived from Ms.Bird...and it was very easy to open. Thank you!!

I have osteoporosis and although my medication is a different one to Fosamax, it does the same thing.
The listed side effects of heart attacks and osteonecrosis of the jaw do scare me quite a bit, but my doctor tells me I have more chance getting murdered than getting these side effects. Hmmm! What else do I do, especially when I've broken 6 bones in 5 years, and if I were to break a hip I may never walk again? Also, the chance of death from pulmonary embolus after a major fracture is very high, so how do you make the choice of whether to take the medications with all their related risks, or do you go without and take the risks that go with osteoporosis and the ensuing fractures?

Well you are between a rock and a hard place Koala...if you have already broken 6 bones in 5 years you have to keep taking it. I've never broken anything and am very active in my yard (I understand that exercise helps) so I'm going off it...at least for awhile. Maybe next physical we'll do another bone density test and see if there's any change.
I'm a huge believer in being our own advocates re: our bodies.

My aunt takes Fosamax and she has breast cancer.
Something about the combination of the chemo and the fosamax her teeth got really bad. So they had to take them all out and wait to see if she could have dentures. She could not because the jaw bone didnot heal properly and she has osteonecrosis. I recently also saw an ad for a lawyer soliciting patients that took fosamax and the other one and has osteonecrosis. There is a large class action suit. I also read somewhere that they might have some alternatives in a couple of years that are better than this current class of drugs. |
