My period is 8 days late and I have never had sex. There is hardly any stress in my life, so I knew that wasn't the cause. Any ideas? My mom and I are a bit worried that there may be something wrong...

It was July 5th when I first started noticing this and after reading the WebMD article I learned that my situation was probably caused by weight loss and increase in activity.
Recently though I have been staying the same weight, done right about the same amount of exercise, and there is little stress in my life. I am over 2 weeks late and my mom is starting to get concerned since my cycle hasn't regulated over the past 2-3 weeks. She is starting to worry that there may be some hormone imbalance or something. I've never seen a gynaecologist, so naturally I am pretty nervous at the thought of having to go to one. Do you think my situation sounds bad enough to see one or do I just let nature take its course? |

Has any other women in the family had irregular periods?
Or hormonal problems? Were you regular before most of the time?

I wouldn't be too concerned just yet. It is common for periods to become irregular if one loses weight and ups their activity or exercise. As an example, some female athletes will stop their periods altogether when going through intense training. And, well, my own niece didn't start her period for the longest time! But, she was a slip of a girl; probably only weighed 90 lbs. Once she started to put on more weight, THEN she started.
As for myself, I didn't have a period for one full year. There was a reason for that and basically due to severe stress. I was around age 23 when that happened. So, I went to a Reproductive Endocrinologist; actually an Infertility Specialist who ran all kinds of tests and nothing was wrong. So, and I forget what the shot was, but I believe it was Progesterone and that triggered it. It was just way too dangerous to go that long without a period as the endometrial lining just thickens. Anyway, that was an extreme situation. But it was explained to me it had to do with the pituitary gland and a long story. I would say if you don't start soon, get with an ob/gyn or RE who can help getting you straightened out IF there is a problem. |

Yes, I was regular before I started exercising and I started when I was about 13 years old. |

Hey Kathi, I want to thank you for your reply. I haven't however lost a dramatic amount of weight. I lost 21 pounds in 4 months and recently I have put on about 1 or 2. My stress is very low, I am a very happy-go-lucky person ! It does look like I will be seeing an ob/gyn though eventually. Thanks again for your imput. |

Kacey if you haven't been to your local doctor yet, I think now's the time to go and get some hormonal blood tests done.
I imagine the lack of menses is due to your weight loss, but there may be a pituitory gland imbalance, or a female hormone problem. You've left it a month. Now I think it's time to get it checked out.
