Default DMV Question

Howdy all...

I've got a prob. The registration on my car was due last month, and I paid the fee in plenty of time. The state's DMV even cashed the check; I verified with my bank.

Prob. is: The new plate tags have not arrived. Now? The registration is expired .

A friend told me that there is a 3-month grace period on expired tags. Does that seem to ring true?

I can't confirm until later today, and love all the "hold" time . I'm not sure when I can get through to someone at the DMV... and after about 5 weeks stuck in bed, I think I really need to get outside and around people but I'm afraid to drive the darn'd car.

bobbi,

I think it depends on the individual officers.

If you get caught, you usually would just go to court and bring proof that you'd paid for it. Can you print out a receipt for the time being to carry around with you?

And put a bug into those DMV people's ears, you might even be able to get a note from them...(I knew someone that went to get a note to carry around with them with similar situation)

but I think it comes down to the individual officers that might pull you over.

After I had called the bank last week, wondering what happened to the check, I also called the DMV. DMV assured me that the tags would arrive by Saturday; the check cleared the bank November 24. I am p'd.

I suspect it's the person who the USPS contracts to deliver mail; he's got some fingers that just don't let go of some mail. Or, it mysteriously vanishes. This isn't the first time mail has disappeared .

The holidays are getting so close, and now that I can get out, I'm ready. I don't think the DMV is going to get anything here in a timely manner. And, I don't know why, but my bank no longer provides cancelled checks.

ETA: Thank you for the link. I ain't drivin' that car anywhere since I see that officers in CA will issue citations regardless of duration. However, I think it's pretty judgemental (sp?) for some to assert that people are as remiss as some wish to believe.

print what you have from your bank. something that shows a copy of the check that cleared. keep it in your car. but keep calling them until they get you your tags!

hubby sent his check in on time. didn't get his tags. got pulled over. he still had to pay a $10 filing fee. even though he brought in his canceled check. he ended up having to go to get his tags in person.

Prob... added to prob. I don't have anything from the bank in writing. It was confirmation via phone with the bank - when I called to find out the status of the check number. Only "proof" I have is my bank book where the check number is entered, along with amt., etc.

I don't think the bank can get me something on such short notice now - so that I can go ahead and drive on expired tags today or within the next couple of days.

It looks like I will have to get the bank to send something, though, to contact the DMV.

I am so frustrated that I'm ready to cry. I mean, I did my part; I paid and have followed up with the bank and DMV and now I'm going to have to ride them for what should have been here a couple weeks ago.

P.S.: I couldn't be so lucky, probably, as to have this officer pull me over on expired tags:

If so I might even hug 'im, but that would probably be written up as assault.

I do have online banking; now, I just have to figure out how to access the statements .

I just read on the CA DMV site that it can take up to 8 weeks for the tags to arrive. Grrr. So, possibly, the person at DMV didn't know what the heck was going on.

Because of how some CA officers regard people driving on expired tags, I'm just not going to do it. I see it leading to nothing but a huge headache if I'm pulled over and cited and have to go to court to clear the citation, when I already have doctors threatening to not fill prescriptions - when I can't get to an appointment. Like... I don't think I can predict when I will or will not be stuck in bed. Imagine if I didn't show up for court. Yikes.

Bobbi you may want to call the post office and talk to the postmaster, they wont know someone has sticky fingers unless folks call, hope the tags arrive in todays mail, and hope it wasnt the snailmans fault

I'm waiting for another call from the DMV; if someone there tells me that the tags were surely mailed, the post office is next.

I had thought that when the USPS contracts with someone to deliver mail (rural route) that it should be that person who does the actual deliveries. The guy who comes around here has also "delegated" to his wife and times. She parks in front of the boxes and spends about two hours doing her make-up.

He has been reported in the past, and he's still got the route.

WAMU & US Bank both let you download your statements and account activity.
Or you can just copy the part that applies to the DMV check.

Some banks will email a copy of a check to you also if needed for records or proof.

In OR generally they allow 30 days leeway on the tags.

If you need to get out and about I'd just go for it.
Have the bank/check info in the car with you a proof just in case.

OR DMV does a lot of stuff online - so you might contact your state DMV online and see if you can get some sort of proof or validation emailed to you.
