Boca High grad battles ALS
Reported by: Paige Kornblue Email: pkornblue@wptv.com Reported by: Jay Cashmere Last Update: 1:45 pm (MDL/ALS News Magazine) Related Links Benefit for Beau MacVane The ALS Association Big City Tavern Boca Raton ![]() BOCA RATON -- The South Florida community will come together Saturday to support a former Army Ranger who is fighting ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Boca Raton High School graduate Beau MacVane was diagnosed with ALS last year and has rallied with his family to raise awareness and support. The Florida chapter of the ALS Association says men and women in uniform are two and half times more likely to be diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease. The disease afflicts thousands of people across the country each year and the average annual costs associated with it are typically $250,000 per patient. A benefit for Beau MacVane and his family will be held Saturday night, June 21, 2008, at Big City Tavern in Boca Raton. The event begins at 6 p.m. and will include big item raffles. Online donations can be made on www.beaumacvane.com as well. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event Announcement: Former Army Ranger Beau MacVane escaped five heroic tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan without so much as a scratch. However, within a year of his honorable discharge from the military, the Boca Raton, Florida native received the worst possible diagnosis imaginable: he was told by doctors that he had ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), an incurable and paralyzing disease which attacks the body’s nerve cells. Some patients live well beyond the 3-5 year mark, but most do not. Beau is fighting this horrible disease with the help of those who love him and he has already raised the bar for those recently diagnosed with ALS. He works out daily with innovative methods and tools and always keeps his head up. Beau’s bravery and positive outlook toward his current situation are a testament to his values and experiences and should cause everyone who hears his story to re ect upon their own situations. Please support Beau and join his family in their quest to beat the wrath of this horrendous a affliction.
