Devotion to ALS Patients
The following post can be found on Curt’s Pitch for ALS’ website. Curt and Shonda Schilling are shining stars in the fight against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. For more than a decade, the Schillings have devoted themselves to the battle against this progressive neuro-degenerative disease that attacks nerve cells and pathways in the brain and spinal cord. The Schillings do not have any family members with ALS. Instead, they were inspired by a visit they had with **** Bergeron, an ALS patient, back when Curt was playing for the Philadelphia Phillies. The visit had a profound impact on them, as they saw a courageous person facing a devastating disease. They developed “Curt’s Pitch for ALS” in 1993 with the hope that it would improve the quality of life for those living with the disease and their families. The program originally ran in Philadelphia, but has since expanded to include Arizona, Massachusetts and the rest of New England. As part of the program, donors receive incentive prizes from Curt and Shonda Schilling based on their level of giving. Those prizes include shirts, hats, autographed memorabilia and tickets to a reception hosted by Curt and Shonda. All proceeds benefit The ALS Association. We are truly grateful to Curt and Shonda Schilling for their continuing generosity, kindness and commitment to ALS patients and the search for a cure. We are also grateful to Red Sox Nation, who has consistently stood by the Schillings by supporting the Curt’s Pitch for ALS program. Thank you to all of our partners who support our efforts to strike out ALS.
