Default New to this pain

Hello all,
I'm new to the site and the arthritis pain. I'm 22 and I broke my leg last summer.
I had the normal pain as the leg was healing and then it faded and all was good for a month or 2
Now I'm getting the arthritis creeping in
I dont know what to expect pain wise For me now it's not really bad just annoying, but it does slow me down a bit.
Anyone in the same boat? full of knowledge to impard upon me?

Not much knowledge, just experiencing the pain, myself! I've yet to get my official diagnosis of arthritis, the rheumy I had my apt with doesn't take my insurance, so I had to cancel it, and have been too busy to find another. I've got arthritic changes mostly in my hands, but when the pain starts, my wrists, elbows and shoulders also hurt. Mine is mostly a dull, nagging pain. I have noticed that mine seems to flare. Usually I don't notice hardly anything, but when it flares, I get the dull, constant pain, along with fatigue. I'm not sure if the fatigue is coming from the arthritis itself, or is just a result of being in pain. I don't do pain gracefully!
I usually just take whatever kind of pain reliever I happen to have nearby: Motrin, Tylenol, etc. Or actually, the store brand counterparts, if truth be told.
I'll watch for others' answers to your post, since I'm in need of advice, too!
Hugs,

Dear Darwin:

My first question is: How was the arthritis diagnosed - by x-ray or mri?
Your Orthopedic Doctor would have been the one to diagnose you.
Second question: Did he/she say it was Osteoarthritis or an inflammatory type "RA"?

If it is Osteoarthritis, I feel your pain (Have A/C joint Osteoarthritis (RT) and starting in the LT) shoulder.

The Arthritis foundation has a wonderful website where you could find some useful information.

There are also tips like PRICE (Prevention, Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) and dietary tips.

For you at 22 excercise would be important - and if you talk to your doctor he or she may recommend the swimming pool.

Know your triggers, if walking aggravates the pain - slow down and take frequent breaks. If it is being stationary - move and stretch. Find out what helps best with your pain - for many heat is great - for others it is a combination of heat and ice - follow the rule of 10 on and 10 minutes off. There are Cox-2 medications that will also help. Believe it or not your doc may tell you that taking calcium may help slow down the degenerative process.

If you notice cold weather aggravates the pain - then wrapping the area with an ace bandage before going out would keep the area warm enough.

Using aspercreme and massage oils are a plus and help combat the muscle pain that accompanies the arthritis

Drink plenty of filtered water (8 glasses) and there are teas like Raspberry, chamomile and my personal favorite the tazo passion tea that help with relaxation.

I hope that your situation improves.

Kim

Default I have had pain and stiffness

Hello friends, I have had pain and stiffness, tingling in my hands, sometimes during the day and mostly at night especially in the mornings. I have been told that it could be arthritis. Once I get going/moving I seem to be okay. I have just started to take Glucosamine 1500 capsules. Is this safe? Any recommendations?

Did you read the post immediately above yours? I have severe rheumatoid arthritis and the post above yours has some excellent advice in it.

Are you taking the amount of glucosamine that is recommended on the bottle?

Also you might try some B12.

And last but not least, see your doctor about these symptoms.

The hand specialist I saw today told me to start taking Clucosamine, but to divide the dose into a couple times a day to 'spread out' the effect of it. He said to not bother with the Glucosamine w/condroitin.

I've had it really bad lately in the joint of my thumb and it has caused numbness and tingling all the way up my thumb and going into my index finger. This stuff sure can be painful. I never know from day to day how bad it will be or if it will be nice and quiet. It really started hitting me in jst this last year.

Also have it in my cervical spine. Tons of accidents with resultant whiplash has done quite a bit of damage to that part of my spine. Well, the whole thing, but bad in my neck.

Have the arthritis in a lot of places, but the worst in my hands at this time.

Now I wonder if the extreme fatigue I've been having is partially due to this. I didn't know arthritis could cause such extreme fatigue. But then, I also have fibro, so who knows!

It's difficult for me to take nsaids for the discomfort as they play havoc on my ulcerative colitis disease.

Anyway, that's what the specialist told me. That Glucosamine is very beneficial.

Oh, and something strange he said to me that I didn't question. He said you can find glucosamine over the counter at many places (which I know) but then he said, "DON'T buy that kind of thing from any dollar stores." Whatever that meant!

Hi there Doody. I was thinking of you, and your aches and sore hand when I saw this post. Must have been mental telepathy, and also DH and I were discussing Glosomine not one hour ago!

He has the most awful back pain, and two knees that need replacing, but he's never tried Glucosmine before. We discussed it a little while ago and he's agreed to give it a go.

At the moment he uses a Toredol weekly patch which he doesn't really think helps much, and some Epilum for the nerve pain in his back. He also has magnets strapped to his back inside a belt and he thinks they help heaps with his back pain, but his knees are getting more and more painful all the time.
He'll get some Glucosomine tomorrow, but he'll get a reputable brand at least until we see how it goes.

Maybe we can compare notes.....

.....
Must be Glucosamine sulphate (there are 2 varieties available). May take a month or so to kick in.
Suggest he also tries and anti-inflammatory. I have found Mobic very good. Takes about 2 weeks to work.
