my fibro/poss ms diagnosis....this has been years...slow sloppy hands, with coordination problems... The other day I noticed that 4 of my knuckles are knobby and sore. ![]() they look like my grandmothers hands. Im only 45 so this seems young to have this happen. What can I do to stop this from happening??? ARe there any supplements??? They are really sore today and are not bending very well, maybe the humiditiy???? Anybody ???? TIA

I was diagnosed with arthritis when I was just 21. It was so bad I was almost crippled with it, at times I could hardly walk. I took massive doses of aspirin (and I don't recommend this) and gold shots. I went into remission when I got pregnant with my son at age 29 and have been in remission since.. that was almost 30 years ago. So I wonder if hormones have something to do with it.
If you can get one of those paraffin hot wax baths, they not only feel wonderful but can help too. I use to get them done as part of my therapy way back when. So I was glad to see that you could buy your own too. I have one and it's pretty easy to use, but I find it helps to have someone help you. In addition to what Bobber suggested... good exercise is typing and playing the piano. Extra vitamin C (oranges and tomatoes), and calcium (I take Viactiv)... Do relaxing exercises, meditate. Keep your hands warm, wear gloves when the weather is cold. |

Sox, I have pain in my hands, too. Especially the joints in my thumbs and index fingers. Some days they look swollen. I can always tell when it's getting humid outside or when it's going to rain. I don't know if it's arthritis or not or just my MS acting up. I take Motrin every six hours and it seems to help. I hope you feel better!

If the joints affected are the first metacarpal joints at the palm...that indicates Rheumatoid arthritis. Should have a doctor evaluation to prevent further damage. RA erodes joints away.
If the swelling is at the first joint (distal) at the fingernail area, those are Herberden's nodes, and indicate Osteoarthritis, and this is less critical. I use Salonpas over the counter for stiff fingers and toe pain. You can cut them into strips and wrap around the finger. Stiff fingers may be a prelude to "trigger finger" where the tendon gets stuck. So I prefer to use the Salonpas often to help prevent this, because it requires surgery to release.

Thanks for the replies and help.
![]() Its the joints by the fingernails...I didnt think it was RA as I have had blood tests and such in the past to rule it out. So far it is only about half of my fingers. My father is a chiropractor and he is going to give me some supplements to hopefully help. ![]()

Heberden's nodes are spurring of the bones.
I think the best preventative is magnesium. No one knows what causes these, yet. But they are really benign and don't destroy the joint. I have severe OA and only have 2 so far. I know people younger than I am who have many! Mine are on joints that work the hardest. My right thumb and index finger. The thumb one is actually going down now. It only hurt to squeeze it when it appeared recently.

Welcome to NeuroTalk.
I 'd keep an eye on that joint just in case...there are infections, that can affect that first joint as well. So can psoriasis.
