Hi, I am new here. I have a highly articulate 8 year old son who has just been diagnosed by the Ed Psych as having Non Verbal Learning Disorder with the associated Asperger overlap. Whilst not shocked, I wasn't expecting this and simply don't know where to look for information in order to support him best at school. He struggles in all areas academically except for those that involve talking and has a sizeable difference between his verbal processing IQ which is high and visual processing IQ which is rock bottom. We are in the UK.

Lara, thank you for those very useful links. NVLD us not widely recognised and a change of the usual teaching styles is going to present a challenge at school. The emphasis tends to be on visual learners but that won't help my son!

Clearly I need to order Tony Attwood's book, he seems to be highly regarded.

A meeting with the school should be organized asap. It's their job to help your son in the classroom environment and they can start off by making some changes straight away. It can be a battle, but these days it can be done.

Prof Attwood is a wonderful person. I don't know what we would have done without him and yes, his book was extremely helpful to me regarding Aspergers. He gives talks overseas a lot so if you ever get the chance to listen to him it would be worth it. There are many short talks on youtube by the way.
