Ok Ok Ok, bad choice of words. What I meant is there doesn't appear to be a valid reason for confinement other than he was afraid. Meaning he wasn't out of control or going after anyone. Sorry.

And your right about not needing a disorder. I could have been the poster child for bad behavior in school. Once I was labeled the bad kid, it followed. I hate labels. Teaching college was my way to give back. But that's another story.

But, I still stand in my opinion that it is abuse. My goodness, if this school chooses this type of punishment as a last resort for a child who is scared, what do they do for all children? Would they have done this to a student who, say, wasn't labeled with a disorder? Probably not. Just saying.

very true, this is worth checking into also... whether he was being discriminated because of the label.

When it comes to using restraint or using the rooms like Julie has described.

There needs to be seen in the child a verbal, or physical threat to themselves
or others. Because even with verbal it can go to something else.

What it is used for is to let the child calm down and have a cool off period.
But it is supposed to be used for a short period. It is usually set up in
a behavior intervention plan. But in some severe cases, And I am not
calling this a severe case. Because I don't consider this one.
They can use it when necessary.

This room, is just a room that is smaller than the others in the building.
It usually will have say a bean bag, or something. Because a chair can
be thrown. There are no pencils, or tables for same reason.

They are not supposed to lock the doors. If this should ever happen.
It should be reported to the Department of Education.

I believe I have it all right.

Dear Donna,
This is all very useful.

Do you think it should be reported to the state (not the US Dept of Ed)??

Yes, Thanks Mari
You report it to the State Dept. of Education. Specifically the special
education dept. They are the ones that monitor this part.
Even if the student isn't part of special education I believe on this particular
part.
