Default Huffington article about medications & need for supplements

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/hyla-c..._b_691711.html

Quote:
Is Your Medication Robbing You of Nutrients Part 2: Getting Specific

Psychotropic (psychiatric) medications.
For antidepressants to work optimally, an ongoing supply of the B vitamins must be available as co factors to help manufacture the needed neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine. (18, 19)
So, while these drugs may not directly deplete B vitamins, patients on these medications should ensure they get enough of these vitamins.

In addition, be aware that lithium carbonate, used for treating bipolar illness, depletes folic acid (take 800 mcg) and inositol (take 500 mg bid). Stimulant drugs for ADD and ADHD can deplete the amino acid carnitine, especially worrisome in vegetarians, since it's found in meat.

that was really a good read. i just bought the book.
I already have some of the supplements he mentioned. He also wrote this To cover all bases, it is easiest to provide this basic daily coverage to anyone on medication (and adjusting as needed to the specific one):

1. High potency multivitamin mineral formula
2. CoQ10 (200 mg)
3. Omega-3 fatty acids (2 grams)
4. Additional dose of vitamin D (2000 IU, and preferably one with added 200 mcg vit K)
5. Probiotics (1 billion units).
which didn't mention things such as b12 and folic acid.

I've been posting about this subject for years!

This is another book, on the same subject.

Others: The Side Effects Bible, by Dr. Vagnini.
Drug Induced Nutrient Depletion Handbook by Pelton and LaValle, (both pharmacists).

My thread here, from '08:
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/sh...ad.php?t=42135

For an abbreviated version of depletions on the web there is this source:
http://www.chiro.org/nutrition/ABSTR...orticosteroids

It has been my experience that the lay public is resistant to this information. This is because doctors are totally out of this loop and when asked do not give informed answers to their patients.

I get very little response from my efforts to educate on this subject here and elsewhere.

As far as the recommendations on inositol go with lithium, it is still unclear if this is the mechanism by with lithium works on mania. Restoring inositol for these patients may decrease effectiveness. It is rather like the effects of supplementing folate in patients taking anti-seizure drugs. Folate reduces the anti-seizure effects. Lithium and inositol may be similar.

From that article quoted at Huffington, I see nothing new there.
But it is always good to try again and get people to pay attention!

Thank you Bobby.

The Drug Induced Nutrient Depletion Handbook is out of print, and will not be given a new edition, because not enough doctors and others were buying it.

It is copyrighted 2001.

Because most if not all of the data in that 591 pg reference was not given to doctors free (they expect them free as gifts), or came out after patents expired, or was ignored by drug companies (statin makers esp) so as not to reduce sales of their drugs... doctors don't "believe" that the mountains of data collected from around the world are "valid". It is just a prime example of the medical blindness that exists today!

I used to see people getting massive doses of Lasix (a diuretic) which caused MORE edema and getting their doses raised, and MORE edema because of thiamine depletion! This attitude eventually leads to death you know (typically heart failure from magnesium deficiency and low thiamine). On the way to death, these poor souls endure pain and suffering which is avoidable, but no one listens! Basically just for that one drug, these patients get drug induced BeriBeri... which doctors believe does not exist in this country of well nourished adults!
