Default The ketogenic diet may have mood-stabilizing properties.

Med Hypotheses. 2001 Dec;57(6):724-6.
The ketogenic diet may have mood-stabilizing properties.

El-Mallakh RS,
Paskitti ME.
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of Louisville School of Medicine, Kentucky 40292, USA.

Quote:
The ketogenic diet, originally introduced in the 1920s, has been undergoing a recent resurgence as an adjunctive treatment for refractory epilepsy, particularly in children. In this difficult-to-treat population, the diet exhibits remarkable efficacy with two-thirds showing significant reduction in seizure frequency and one-third becoming nearly seizure-free.

There are several reasons to suspect that the ketogenic diet may also have utility as a mood stabilizer in bipolar illness. These include the observation that several anticonvulsant interventions may improve outcome in mood disorders.

Furthermore, beneficial changes in brain-energy profile are noted in subjects on the ketogenic diet. This is important since global cerebral hypometabolism is a characteristic of the brains of depressed or manic individuals.

Finally, the extracellular changes that occur in ketosis would be expected to decrease intracellular sodium concentrations, a common property of all effective mood stabilizers.

Trials of the ketogenic diet in relapse prevention of bipolar mood episodes are warranted.

Hi,
It's a high fat diet. 80-90% of the calories are from fat. Cheese cake is allowed I think.
I would not try to reach ketosis without a doctor.

Default still looking for better science

Hi,
Every six months or so, I check google scholar for updated publications about this diet for bipolar. I get nothing.

Intuitively, it seems that the ketogenic diet would work on mood, anxiety, and so on.

I'm willing to bet that we will see some good science at some point --especially as the diet is being readapted into the epilepsy community.

Haven't been here in awhile.
Had surgery (long story).
Anyway, is the ketogenic diet similar to the paleo diet (several books out these days)?
My doc put me on something similar...
Lots of veggies....lean meat, fish etc.
Nuts, seeds, some fruit
No sugar, dairy or grains.
Anyway, I'm losing a little weight after lots of frustration.
It's still a tad slow, but more consistent and I feel well.
The word "ketogenic" reminds me of the Atkinds stuff.
Atkins always seemed "fatty" to me and this isn't.
You havning luck on it Mari? Did I see a super slender photo of Bizi?
Way to go folks!

Default ketogenic diet -- 80-90% of the calories from fat

Dear Vowel Lady,

The ketogenic diet helps control seizures for some people with epilepsy. It is a high fat diet -- 80-90% of the calories from fat.
Some researchers think it might work for bipolar, but we have no research on it yet -- no drug companies to pay for it.
While we wait for the research, some folks with bipolar might benefit from a low-ish carb diet and good oils.

Right now I am doing Weight Watchers. They emphasize lots of veggies, fruit, and good lean protein.

Bizi recently started doing the Paleolithic diet.
