Smile looking for new year traditions. could use some luck.

Greetings,
What do you all do for luck for the new year?

In S. FL we eat 12 grapes at midnight and eat black beans w/rice on Jan 1.

I'm remember throwing out the trash and and a bucket of water on the 31 to symbolize throwing out the bad luck from the past year.

I had a European hairdresser who never worked on Jan 1. She said that whatever you did on that day you would be doing the whole year.

Default Mari

Mari,

I think I will be getting a massage, and if that is what I will be doing the rest of the year, that would be some good luck. I found a place open on New Year's Eve. Husband is watching football no brainer for a sunday. And I am taking home carryout, but now you have me wondering, what do I get for carryout.

Italian=tomatoes
Chinese=beef lo mein
Indian=stomach issues
Seafood=will I turn into a shrimp?

gotta go, think about this.

These 2 were interesting.

My tradition is to stay home with my neighbors. We have had good luck with it for over 9 years now. (No drunk driving / drivers. )

Plus a kiss at midnight. Lovers first, friends next. I like that one best.

Unhappy lentils for prosperity

tradition where i live, is to have lentils. supposed to bring prosperity for the new year.

Well Happy New Year to everyone.

ok, now, where is the lentil icon? where??? ok, guess it will be a purple lentil tonight.

Wink Ours

Our PA Dutch / German tradition is pork and saurkraute on New Years Day.

At midnight we all go out an bang pots after a hugs and kiss to each other.
Hey, several years when I was single parent I actually went to bed and slept through. Made dinner for my Dad New Years Day though.

Smile Thank you.

Befuddled, Just to be safe, I was going to do black beans and black eyed peas -- seperate pots perhaps.

DiMarie, I had friend of Polish descent who used to cook something with sauerkraut each Jan 1. Maybe it was pork. I forgot about making noise at midnight. The neighborhood kids usually take care of that for us with the fireworks.

Bear, Thanks for the links. I wonder if I should place a piece of cabbage in my wallet to ensure that the wallet is full all year?!

Nuttybuddy, You win with the massage idea. Chinese sounds good. Noodles symbolize long life. I'm not making that up -- I read it somewhere -- just not lately.

Waves, Thanks for the purple lentils. Since round things and sliced sausage are supposed to remind us of the circle of life as well as stand in for coins, maybe I'll just add coins to something without having to cook the sausage lentil dish.

Ok, I've got lots to work with. I'm bringing something sweet to the little party my friend is giving because I want the new year to be a sweet one.

Can you tell I have time on my hands??

Red face hi Mari

i like your threads recently even if i can participate only scarcely.

i am glad you liked the purple lentil. here is another one

Default bump up 2006-2007-2008

Hi,
I am wondering what to cook and what to do for the New Year.

I would really love a clean apt to start the New Year right. Maybe hubby and I can get some cleaning done on Monday.

Talking lentils lentils lentils, money money money

away with tradition... sort of!

i'm going out with a friend for an early movie after which we will eat at our favourite

CHINESE RESTAURANT!!!

there is a sort of traditional aspect
in that this friend and i have dined together on the 31st, and cheered in the new year the last 4 new years together. this time we will go home right after dinner, since we live too far apart now. plus, i don't have my apartment so it would be a "complicated family issue" to do the midnight thing which neither family his or mine normally do. last year we tried here, but it wasn't so relaxed and fun like when i was on my own. besides then we would hang out after midnight, but we live waaaaay far apart... so driving after midnight? naaaaah. last year we had to make sure he left soon enough so as too encounter as few drunk drivers as possible. plus we are having problems with heavy fog at night.

my parents are having the traditional lentils, along side the yucky sausage stuff

if i were home, i would just eat the lentils, maybe make myself some rice alongside. the lentils are cooked and served separately from the yucky gooey sausage.

my mom is saving me some lentils - which i love - for tomorrow.

~ waves ~ wishing you a happy new year
