S2 Finale & S3 Ep.1
Hi Mari
I think the stuff about Said praying (on the boat) was in the S2 cliffhanger? That occurs at the same time the prisoner capture happens. And no we have not seen him praying before - I thought it was odd he allowed himself to be interrupted, and I also wondered about the direction lol. And I was very amused by the statue, and Said's observation on it. My first thought was that perhaps it was an animal, not a human. I also did see S3 Ep.1 but it shows what is happening to Sawyer, Jack and Kate who are now captive of the Others. there are some flashbacks too. we do not see anything else like what is going on back at camp. I missed tonight altogether, so Ep.1 is as far as I've gotten. I have set my alarm to watch the Ep.2 repeat tomorrow morning - that's my last chance! It's also on tonight at 4 am but I tend to forget during the night if I'm up and I don't want to set an additional alarm my phone sometimes gets overloaded and then nothing goes off. ------------- Hmmmm. I am confused though about the discrepancy as to what we each think is in which episode. I am going to check IMDB to see if there descriptions match what I am seeing - I'll be back. ~ waves ~ |

Hi Mari
Here are the links to IMDB's Episode Lists for Seasons 2 and 3 of LOST. From each season you can navigate to other seasons. I thought this source could be useful to help us "sync". Waves,
I got confused. I watched Season 3 episode 1 "A Tale of Two Cities eventually. This episode was disturbing as all get out even though I had seen it once before. Those cages are upsetting. Kate on the beach in a dress was disturbing and not really necessary except to let us see what Henry Gale / Ben is up to. (I wished she was not put in a dress). We are introduced to Juliet. We know that she stands up to Ben. We are introduced to the kid in the cage next to Sawyer. I felt bad for Sawyer when he was told that the bears only needed two hours to figure out how to get food. It was good that Sawyer and the kid tried to escape. That gives us some hope. Maybe the next escape is better planned. Jack is in an aquarium. Juliet is vague about what group made the aquarium. I wished he would take the stupid sandwich and not try to keep fighting. The Jack flashbacks always bore me except it is sad that his wife has left him and that his father has taken up drinking after 50 days of sobriety. I thought it was sweet that the father does seem to care about Jack (His call to Jack's ex-wife) . Do you like Jack? Maybe sometimes he is useful. We did not get to see if Kate ate the strawberries. She accepts the fish biscuit from Sawyer. ======= So what happened in the hatch last episode? Did Locke mess up by not putting in the numbers? Mari |
discombobulated by disturbing stuff
Hi Mari
I just wanted to let you know what was going on, and why I haven't really written much in terms of my own thoughts as to what is going on with LOST. You mentioned about S3 Ep1 being disturbing. YES. I found it very disturbing too, in many of the same ways you mentioned, andthensome. The psychological contrast between aspects of Kate's treatment are very disturbing, the dress and the myriad implications of that, the exquisite looking breakfast... with a captor, her having to cuff herself in order to partake... later we see the cuffs have made her bleed but we are left to imagine how it might have happened. :( It goes even further than that single episode for me, though. I actually started feeling disturbed at the end of S2, and now ... even though what is going on is significant in terms of character development, so I do find it intriguing ... I also find it hard to watch. It would probably be easier if i could watch just once a week, but a daily dose of this twisted stuff is hard for me to stomach! I think that is why I find it hard to come back and comment on it. :o:( Hopefully it will be less disturbing ... or I will adjust to it soon. This is what I saw tonight (description from IMDB): S3, Ep4 - "Every Man for Himself" Quote:

I remember finding some episodes upsetting. The impact is less intense in the rerun experience. Thoughts on Season 3 Episode 2 “The Glass Ballerina” I noticed that Sun is the wealthiest of any of the other characters. Do you have any thoughts on whose baby Sun is carrying? She is a tough cookie -- cuts fish and shoots Colleen on the boat. And Colleen herself is pretty fierce. Sawyer tells Kate that Juliet has more steel than any of the men. He has figured out that most of the men are not fighters and talks over the hidden sound system about waiting for their vulnerable moments. I am wondering what Ben wants to do with the boat. Doesn’t he have access to another boat? For us Red Sox lovers still celebrating the first World Series win in 86 (?) years (and against arch rival Yankees!), the Red Sox win to show Jack current events was cool. Alex is looking for her boyfriend Karl. Sometimes the back stories seem more important than others. Sun makes the choice to stay with her husband. Season 3 Episode 3 “Further Instructions” I am always confused about our survivors spread out in other places. People are here: Trapped in cages Out side/ near the old hatch With the sail boat At the village of the others I was so relieved to hear and see Locke again after putting up with Jack and the cages stuff. The polar bear stuff is silly except to keep up the danger level of the island. In the airport vision Boone points out people who do not need Locke’s help and others who are fine “for a while” and so on. Hurley has made it back and Desmond can see things like Locke’s speech before it happens. I think Desmond gives Hurley a quick explanation of what the key did to the island but I do not know what happened. M |

Thoughts on S3 Ep4. Behind on S3 Ep.s 5 & 6
S3 Episode 4 - "Every Man for Himself"
Desmond is figuring things out about the island and the electromagnetic stuff. I liked the "golfclub" experiment that elicited an instant thunderstorm with lightning that promptly struck the club. ------------ The nasty pacemaker trick on Sawyer was awful. I also wondered about the island that Ben showed him, and wondered whether what he was saying was true. In one sense, I wondered if they were not, in fact, on the original island, and the island they could see from the high clearning were not the "Alcatraz-like" islet... or another island. In another sense, It occurred to me that "the" island could itself be curved around like a crescent... tightly enough that from one tip extremity you could see the other but not the connecting land... less likely. But my head dreams up all sorts of things. S3 Episode 5 - "I Do" I MISSED THIS COMPLETELY - all repeats! :Bawling: I had found transcripts at some point... I will try to find them again and read this episode transcript over the weekend. ============================== S3 Episode 6 - "The Cost of Living" I missed the beginning of this tonight. I shall probably try to catch the beginning on the late night repeat so that I get all of it, including may be some snippets of the last episode which I never saw. I don't want to wait till Monday to have to see the beginning bits. I liked this episode. I liked seeing that "our folks" made some headway. It was about time Sawyer and Kate quit the reciprocal con act that they didn't give squat about each other too. I was frustrated with Kate for not communicating better when Jack is offering them an escape window. They have some serious leverage at this juncture.... USE it ... tell Jack what is going on.... Make them provide safe passage...etc... I was screaming at her inside my head. On the flip side, I was quite surprised at what Jack did in order to win that edge. I was quite surprised at the flashbacks of Kate getting married... to the cop played by Nathan Fillion. A cop? What WAS she thinking. ~ waves ~ |

I am going to look up what day we are in for learning about the pregnancy. I do not think that counts as a spoiler. LOST - the night repeat - should be coming on any minute now... really, it should already BE on!!! they are late!!! GRRR.:hissyfit: the last thing i need is i am distracted and miss the beginning AGAIN!!!! rughh.

Waves,
WOW! I had a strong reaction to your post about Nathan F. I laughed and got so very distracted. :D Now I am back to check on how long Sun (and the other survivors) have been on the island. Quote:

I think I am three behind. I am watching on Netflix so I hope to catch up. I might fast forward a little (but probably not . . . this stuff is so addicting.) I do hate most of the flashbacks . . . dunno why . . . . we get some background stuff that is apparent now and occasionally apparent later . .. BUT WE DO NOT MOVE THE PLOT FORWARD -- that is my gripe about them. O.k., no griping. Back to watching. Mari |
Waves,
S3 Episode 4 - "Every Man for Himself" I used to watch these so closely. I remember asking two guys at work about the 5 iron that Paulo is willing to let Desmond take. I wondered if it is not needed as much as other clubs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_(golf) Quote:
I like the Sawyer episodes but this was more violent than it had to be. We cannot tell if it matters who is in charge of the others. I like Jack and Juliet together, maybe because this is a new pairing. It was sad to watch Jack pounding on Colleen's chest to resuscitate her. Kate gets her clothes back. Episodes with Sawyer have more literary references than others. The idea of a possible second island . . . it looks like total reason for despair. I watched Season 3 Episode 5 "I Do" but will not write about here because you have not seen it yet. I fast forwarded Season 3 Episode 6 We're not quite in Portland. 1) Locke talking about Ecko and the "monster" 2. There is mention of Jacob's list 2) the Nate Fillion and Kate scenes, 3) the end when Jack tells Kate to run. Mari |
mari,
Did you start rewatching them from the beginning? just curious. *we watched the whole thing 4 times and that was enough for hubby..We are still watching the x-files and we are also watching season 3 of downton abby and loving it! bizi |

That is great that you like Downton Abbey. I can re-watch Downton Abbey for a while! Except one episode I missed. Twice I missed it.  I admit to spoiling the season by reading The Guardian Recaps/ Reviews in the UK back in the fall and right after what they call the Christmas special and we call the Season Finale. The writer and creator of Downton Abbey (Jullian Fellowes) was the writer for Gosford Park, directed by Robert Alman. You might like that movie. It also stars Maggie Smith (2001). I loved it and could watch it again. Jullian Fellowes also wrote the BBC 2011 Titanic TV Mini Series-- lots of class based stuff about the Brits. It is available on amazon and other places. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1869152/ (There is another Titanic from around 2012 but it is not the Jullian Fellowes one so I do not know anything about it.) I read the transcript for the episode i missed - Ep 5 "The Cost of Living" http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/The_...ing_transcript Wow - that was important... Juliet and some others that aren't specified would like us and Jack to believe she and some others have a subversive movement going... against Ben... can't decide if this is for real, or if they are playing Jack - either possible at this stage. or maybe i'm just hypersuspicious of everything i've been so sarcastic lately my parents alot of the time can't tell if i'm being serious any more!! :o The stuff with Eko was really hard to visualize and I wish I had seen it instead. Especially as it kept alternating between his jungle experience part of which seemed like they could be visions, and flashbacks. Very very very difficult for me to get a good feel for what was shown reading the transcript even with all the screenplay notes. ----------------- Anyway, I'm up to date through S3, Ep6 "I Do". (That is the one with Nathan Fillion in Kate's flashbacks, where Kate tries to get Jack to operate and Jack ultimately starts to but, at end episode, blackmails the others by placing Ben's life in the balance.) ----------------- I have *NOT YET* seen "Not in Portland" - that is Episode 7! Hope to watch that Monday evening if dinner is not late. This Monday being Easter Monday means lower odds of being freed up in time though. I may end up watching on Tuesday. I really want to see this one - I really hope I get to SEE it and not have to resort to the transcript! Thanks for the info on Sun's pregnancy dealy... I still cannot be sure from that the child is Jin's... I think what I said on it before still applies ~ waves ~ |

The Cost of Living I was so happy to see Sayid back at the camp. I feel that we might work on getting Kate, Jack, and Sawyer back soon. I wrote this about what Ecko’s brother said: “It is time to confess. To be judged, Brother. I will be waiting.” (It is interesting to hear the word “brother” used for a fraternal relationship when we have been hearing Desmond say ‘brother” differently. In this episode Ecko’s fate / destiny/ luck catches up with him. I do not understand this episode because many times we see that the island helps people heal from their past. Sometimes death means that the person has done what they needed on the island. This death feels different. I think we are to figure out that the brother was not his brother and it was the monster who was asking him to confess his sins. This is the music playing during Ecko’s end. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2Kwv8TYOqY Jack is doing chin up type exercises. We see him as physical and strong. Ben makes him wear a while monk-like shirt for the funeral of Colleen. Brenda Lee’s “I wonder” plays playing during the funeral. (it is beautiful and haunting. ) Maybe the song is for Ecko as well. It is hard to know whom to trust. Everything Juliet says can be construed in several ways – even her “I hate funerals” to Jack as if it is a normal thing people say. But Juliet seems very careful about what she says. Jack really wanted to eat that hamburger that Juliet brought him. I was almost worried that he would not get to eat it . He eats while Ben talks. There is a weird scene where Juliet talks to Jack and has him watch cards of her holding up the exact opposite of what she says. She speaks about Jack helping Ben through surgery but holds up cards in the video asking him to kill Ben by making it look like an accident. It is cool to see Sayid and Desmond together. Sayid does not know Desmond and is not comfortable with him. I think they just meet here in this episode. Nikki and Paulo are new characters for the viewers but they have been at the camp since the beginning. Locke and Sayid sort of explain the video communication of the hatches to Nikki and Paulo and thus to the audience. That section ends when they see another man (new character) looking at them. Your transcript is wrong in this section. The guy looking at them does not say anything. Locke says this, “I guess he'll be expecting us.” Quote:
We know Ben lies. M |
Half way through the entire show
By the way,
Season 1 -- 25 episodes Season 2 - 24 episodes Season 3 -- 23 episoeds Writer's strike along with some producer decisions Season 4 -- 14 episodes Season 5 - 17 episodes Season 6 -- 18 episodes By my rough count (at The Cost of Living) we are half way through the show now. The plot pacing picks up. Mari |
That is good perspective to have - 1/2 way through.
I am reading the transcript ahead... i've got a TVD one to read too by now i think - i stay up to date with US airing via transcripts on that show, because the network that shows it played mean tricks after season 1 and i went into deprivation and broke down and said screw them. But I digress. Re pre-reading on LOST: I figure reading even just one episode ahead might 1. help me pass the time because i am agitated/bored other not good stuff. it is hard to concentrate i tend to be "skippy" but i am managing... 2. help me with the shock value if an episode is difficult... easier to read than to watch... as you say when it is a repeat it is less difficult... if i've read it i don't get hit from left field... kinda dilutes the expierence but maybe i need it diluted right now --------------------------- on a separate note You've mentioned literary references ... here's one i noticed from the start but it struck me as really odd: What do you think about John Locke having the name of a famous philosopher - but not just any philosopher - an EMPIRICIST! Locke... especially at beginning is the big faith/destiny dude... there is even an episode early on which brings this out in a conflict with Jack our science guy "Man of Science, Man of Faith" i can't figure it being a coincidence they chose that name for him....yet it seems like a contradiction in terms... at least for now.... ~ waves ~ |
Oh Man! Desmond's last name!

Locke and Hume, well go figure! So why then Desmond instead of David... I suppose further along I'll find out he changed his name or something....:confused: ~ waves ~ |

continuing reading transcript of "Flashes Before Your Eyes" (Ep8)
Quote:
From the transcript of "Flashes Before Your Eyes" (S3 Ep8) [Desmond in a second-hand shop] Quote:
I don't know anything about Rousseau's philosophy I'm afraid, I'd have to look it up, so I'll leave that aside for now. Also that is only a single last name. I'd have to research possible relationship matches... like a daughter or wife called Danielle. I can deal with the presence of a name being incidental or coincidental, especially just a last name. Indeed at first, I thought "John" was just a common enough name and that "Locke" was a cute pun with his fighting with the "locked" hatch. But now, we have two characters with the full names of two contemporary and historically relevant empiricists. NOW this is really bugging me, though! John Locke and David Hume are both primary figures in the development of the empirical thinking used in science today. While their philosophies have slight differences, neither refutes God or Faith - in fact these aspects are integral to both philosophies. Yet, the episode "Man of Science, Man of Faith", seems to want to point to distinct attributes of Jack and Locke (respectively) but in fact both would apply to Locke the philosopher... IN that order. I may have to review the transcript to see if what is attributed to Jack is more intrinsic to episode content, or more of an interpretation we are "encouraged" to have at that point in the series. Oh dear I suppose we could write an essay on the similarities and differences... especially if we go fishing for similarities.... this is so bizarre. Btw, Hume, the philosopher, was Scottish, just like "our Desmond".:eek:;) ========================== Am I starting to sound like a broken record? Did you notice these two figures / the empiricist parallel before? What did you / do you make of it - if anything? ~ waves ~ |

reading transcripts
... it's addicting, but...
Boy, these flashbacks are really REALLY getting annoying  Between those and the parallel events involving different groups My mind is getting thrown left right up down center... :hissyfit: ARGGH! ~ waves ~ |
Quote:
I usually hate the flashbacks. But they are necessary for information. I do find it hard to keep track of everyone when they are in different places. Quote:
You do have the benefit ( or disadvantage) of having the show everyday. I hate to encourage you to watch these . Mari |
Dear Mari
Don't worry
I didn't even start posting until I knew I was going to watch the show... at least as long as they keep running it. The transcripts are even harder when different groups are doing different things because one has to imagine them in different surroundings - you don't get that scene change... or some of the scenery is similar. We get flashbacks for different people sometimes - not questioning the need for them or their validity. It's just the mind jig. and it's even harder when reading because there are lots more mind jigs that aren't supported by visual stimuli. This happens with TVD transcripts also, but for some reason I have an easier time of it. Idon't know if it is just that there are fewer. Sometimes when they flip back and forth frequently, I have a hard time whereas seeing it on screen helps the brain to transition. rest assured you arent' getting me more addicted than I'd get myself. ;) I just hope I am not sort of dragging you along with my avalanche of neo-enthusiasm for the show... including everything between the mysteries, the frustrations and the delectable Nathan Fillion flashes of it! ;):p "flashes" ah if only. i didn't say that. ignore! brain gazillion directions forgive.:cool: ~ waves ~ |
lost is very addicting! try to watch the pilot first and second episodes of the series one.
awesome! |
Waves,
You mention the visual transitions -- The tv version also gives us sound when it transitions. I have been trying to figure out how to say this so I will say it here even if un-elegantly. The pay off in the finale might not be exactly what you want. I am glad that for you it is a tv show and not a years long addiction like it was for me. (Whoops I think I outed myself). Some people (like me) have decided never again to follow a show with that many puzzles. For example, Once Upon a Time --- watched it twice. Not going to get caught up in it. Another example: Revolution --- have not watched it at all. I watch shows with no more than a two episode arc. I did watch Homeland on Showtime but thank goodness it only goes for about 12 shows and then is done until 9 months later and it does not have a massive cast with dozens of plot lines and mysteries.
