Default WWTFD? Computer acting buggy. Mac problems.

Hi, I upgraded my Mac to OSX Snow Leopard a couple of days ago.

Since then I twice had to unplug because the mouse stopped working and then I could not do an option / command / escape to shut down Safari. Usually Safari shuts down on my command when it starts acting stupid.

=-=-
Oh DARN! People at the Mac Snow Leopard (10.6.3) site have the same problems with the mouse that I have!!!! I liked Apple until today.

Anyone here use Lion (10.7) -- released two weeks ago???

M.

Default Reinstall OSX

Do you have Original OSX install CDs - so you could downgrade to the previous version?

remember to pull your data off onto separate media first (USB key, external drive that is not the boot drive) A full install may want to reformat.

this is a general suggestion as i haven't worked recent mac systems and doen't know how they distribute their OS. if you haven't cross posted to the computer forum here i would do that too...

(((hugs)))

Mari i missed the last line of your post........

i would be very wary of installing something released only 2 weeks ago unless it is a specifically targeted "bug fix release" i.e., not a lot of new testing needed, besides the fix areas and sanity checks (oh and they did that so well with Snow Leopard, eh? )

Lion MAY have been released to fix precisely the bugs you are seeing in Snow Leopard... i would advise looking at the Lion release notes to see what bugs or improvements are included.

One last observation, from its release number, 10.7 (rather than 10.6.4), Lion seems like a full minor release and not a bug-fix release. However, sometimes they bump the numbering scheme to the next minor release to encourage ppl to upgrade from an icky release.

In any since, you are having problems, you could certainly try the upgrade, and if that doesn't improve things, go back to the previous version you were using.

these are generalities i have seen with various products, both those i've used and those i've worked on. Apple users may be aware of differences i am not, in how Apple does things.

Waves,
That is helpful. I will look at the Lion release notes.

I started to look at the Apple boards. People are talking about the Lion version being the transition to Apple's brand new operation system.

Lion is out in Beta version. Some have problems. They are talking about backing up to the the previous install as you mentioned.
That is tricky for me. I don't want to do that -- especially since I did not back up with Time Machine before I did the install of Snow Leopard.
Hubby could do a reinstall on his own computer, but he can't do it for mine. The mouse is ok today. Maybe I need to find an Apple person to do the reinstall for me.

I need to sit on this for a while.

Hi,

Fixing the mouse is way beyond my skill set.

This person has a list of things to do before I restarted. Duh. I restarted right after I down loaded.

http://www.sysprobs.com/fix-usb-mous...-update-vmware

I am going to choose to be depressed about this for a few days. Then I will come up with a plan later.

Oh. I found a youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgQjAn9l1-s
Post Installation Snow Leopard Iatkos s3 v2/Mouse fix tutorial

Apparently, the mouse problems manifest differently. Mine is not exactly the same as the youtube problem.

Heart having a tech fix it hands-on might be the least headache...

Mari,

in your first post, you said you were running Snow Leopard ... then made a reference to ppl on apple boards running Snow Leopard 10.6.3.

the document you found talks about problems with updating to 10.6.6:
Quote:
[How to Fix]- USB Mouse Stopped Working After Snow Leopard 10.6.6 Update in VMware
Was it a typo/whatever-o, or are you actually running 10.6.3? Can you do an 'about' and tell me exactly what system version you are running?

things still confused about the vacation. sigh. i am torn. but if i left, it wouldn't be right away... meantime, i need to sit and think about other things. i can try to help you look things up. i may be able to make things more intelligible for you. a sort of tech go-between between.

that said, since system problems are delicate, the best solution for you might very well be to go to an apple store and have a tech evaluate and fix the problem. pretty sure they could, at a cost of course. this might be the least hair-pulling solution for you.

i am wondering if you keep your important documents all grouped in one or several folders, that you can identify. if so, you could simply copy these off elsewhere, without doing a full backup. (if you choose to send it in, i recommend you do this anyway.) then, at worst you'd lose system settings/preferences. but you could ask the tech if they could do a backup from where your machine/OS is at, and they might even be able to preserve those.

hang in there. it will be ok.

Blank From the "probably won't help but" corner.

I'm still using Snow Leopard. Won't install Lion till it's been out longer & the initial bugs have fixes. Never have used a mouse with the Mac. Only thing that might help: I've noticed that intermittent problems occur with Safari & I'll switch to Fire Fox. Problems vanish. Or vice versa. Not always, but often. Computers are weird like that, at least for me. Like changing out cables fixes a problem but I don't know why, or plugging into different electric.

I love computers but they treat me bad.

Waves,

Thank you.

My About says 10.6.8.

That is strange. The CD box I used says Snow Leopard (with a picture of the cat in snow) and says 10.6.3.
Is there a chance that apple gave me two updates?

I'm depressed today.

1. I woke up with something -- don't know -- I feel hot and foggy.

2. We have rain.

3. Work buddy and I were on the phone twice dealing with carp from work.

4. Hubby and I met my friend's widow's and son for early dinner and afterwards walked through a discount dept store.

=-=-

Hubby runs so wired. I have a difficult time being polite to him when I deal with others -- had to deal with hubby when I was on the phone and I came across sounding harsh -- hubby was rushing me to get out the door when we had plenty of time to get to the wife's house.. I feel bad that I am rough.

Then at dinner, I kept my mouth shut. I sat as quietly and politely as possible. I'm exhausted because that is hard work.
I'm sad because I miss my work friend. This time, I got his wife to tell me more about his early years before I knew him. She seemed to be ok talking about him. I appreciated that.
Hubby is exhausting. I exhaust myself anyway.
I'll be back here later.
