Default Low Carbohydrates Diet

Okay i know its inside the Diet thread.

But the thread is 88 pages long. And I just don't have the patience
to search for the threads with the parts that have this.

I have been told to eat a low carbohydrate diet. And drink 64 ounces
of water a day.

I can do the water with no help. But not the carbohydrate diet. Have
no idea were to start.

SO would you help me. Just simple to start please.

First what kind of eggs? Is Bran cereal considered this. Is oatmeal?

How about bread, Will potato be okay?

Let me hold your hand and give you a hug
((((((HUG)))))
This will be a challenge for you to follow this diet.
I have lots of experience with this diet .The first thing that I would do is sign up for www.sparkpeople.com
get registered and sign up. It has many tools to help you keep tract of what you eat and you can save favorite food items enter in the numbers and save them to your favorites. they also have support groups under community.
May I ask if your a1c was elevated? and this is why your doctor said to follow a low carb diet?
I will help support you.
There are several books out there ...you can probably go to the library and get one. The atkins diet has evolved a bit since it started in the 70's but has worked for numbers of people. It is more than a diet it is truly a life style change.
Protein power was the book that I liked the best.
Instead of counting calories you count grams of carbohydrates.
spark people site will help you do this.
Did he give you a number of carbs that he wants you to eat a day?

I have found 2 "bread" products at the store that I will eat when I want a sandwich.
Natures own double fiber. When counting carbs you get to subtract fiber carbs from your total count. There is also a "flat out" tortilla that is high fiber to make wraps.
You need to start learning to like vegetables. You will need to eat a lot of them. anything green is good. except for starchy ones like peas or corn or potatoes . Veggies have carbs too but they are good carbs and have lots of fiber and can help to fill you up. Carrots have quite a few carbs and so do beets. The food counters will help you count your carbs.
Start reading food labels they tell you the amount of carbs per serving.
If you eat 3 meals a day a good number to try to reach is 20 carbs a meal.
As far as fruits go strawberries and other berries are high fiber so they are good choices, so is cantelope.
Just some good basic advice would be to not drink any calories. Stick to plain water. diet drinks are bad for us.
meats don't have carbs, beef, pork, chicken, fish, shrimp, processed meats have carbs, look at the labels.
But remember how you fix them can quickly add carbs to your meal.
Eggs are good source of protein and are inexpensive.and don't have carbs. When you are planning a meal shoot for 20 grams of protein at each meal.
For example: That would be a 2 egg omelet with 1 oz of ham and 1 oz of cheddar cheese(1 oz of cheese has 1 carb) for breakfast. 1 cup of berries puts you at 10 carbs and 20 grams of protein so you should stay full until lunch.
It is highly reccomended that you start cooking with olive oil and even butter. We need fat in our diets. Fats don't have any carbs.
Salmon is the perfect food. High protein, no carbs, high in good omega 3 fatty acids. It is so good for us. I don't eat it enough.
May I suggest that you start using metamucil if you don't already use something. Not eating beans or grains you can get constipated easily not fun.
There are sugar free shakes and bars and candies. they have sugar alcohol in them, you get to subtract those as well. But I would not rely on them...atkins makes them the chocolate shake is not bad.
Just a start for you.

Dear Donna,

Ask the doctor to send you to a nutritionist for details.
Did he say how many carbs per day?

Any eggs are fine.

Bran cereal is sometimes ok in moderation.
Oatmeal is sometimes ok in moderation.

If you can, reduce bread, rice, pasta, corn.
Give up sweets, fried food, chips, pretzels.

Eat more vegetables. What kind of vegetables do you like?
Tell us what you like to eat.
Salads?
Green beans?

Dear Bizi,

Your menu for the day was wonderful. Did you cook the dinner?
I love Chard! I used to hate Kale when my mom had it in her vegetable garden when I was a kid. Hubby does a good job with it.

Thanks Bizi for the menu.

I'm going to have problems with vegs. But will work slowly on them.

I usually only eat the two that are bad. Corn and peas.

But Kale and cabbage and things like that with a smell to them make
me gag and then I throw up. So I can't even be around the smell of
them. Same for spinach. My husband loves them.

I will work on ways I can eat carrotts and green beans, I hate both.

But I'll find a way. Can I add butter to them, if I could change the taste
I could probably eat them. I know that sounds funny, but.

Donna

Meats, Right now I eat chicken, turkey, and sometimes beef sounds okay.

I have a weird feel for food. I'm not sure why.

Heart can i help?

Dear Donna

perhaps i can help you with cooking ideas for veggies if i have some idea of your taste preferences. i am used to making up dishes.

VEGGIES:

do you like eggplant, bell peppers, zucchini?
whatabout cucumber, tomatoes, celery, fennel bulb (you might not have tried that)?

FLAVORS:

Do you like spicy foods or do you prefer mild flavors?

some thoughts....
... indian style foods, curry?
... chinese style foods, ginger?
... italian style foods, garlic?

other spices: cayenne pepper, paprika, nutmeg, allspice?

herbs: rosemary, sage, thyme, marjoram, bay leaf?

--------------------------------
to start with, let me know which of the veggies you like or tolerate, and any others that you think of that i haven't listed.

flavoring-wise, give me some indication on general taste, and any specific likes (or dislikes). ignore things you don't know ... i will try to extrapolate.

then i can try to provide cooking suggestions that might make a tolerable veggie into a tasty one for you.
--------------------------------

the meats you listed are good. fish would be an excellent addition, especially mackeral and sardines.

butter is ok as far as the low carb part, however, for health in general it is better to use a vegetable oil like olive oil, peanut oil, sunflower or safflower oil. what we do for condiment where we want butter is to use about 2/3 oil, and 1/3 butter (just enough for flavor), instead of all butter. i am aware you take lipitor or similar, which tells me you need to watch cholesterol. using olive oil would help lower cholesterol levels and has other health benefits, whereas butter is more detrimental overall.
