Yes, Bizi,

Do it that way.
OR this one
(but this requires you to cut it in half BEFORE cooking it.
I cut mine after cooking.)

Baked Butternut Squash

Directions
1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

2 Place squash, cut sides down, in a 9x13 baking dish.
Pour water into dish around squash halves.

3 Bake in the preheated oven until tender and easily pierced with a fork, about 1 1/2 hours.
Carefully remove the skin with a fork; it should be very easy to remove.
Top squash halves with butter and season with salt and pepper to taste.

I did go to the recipe and it did say to adjust times if it is smaller....they did not say how much. they also did not say how much water!
Some times recipes are frustrating.
Thank you mari for looking this up.

Bizi,

It does not matter how much water you use as long as it has some water.
The water is to keep it from drying out.
Half a cup of water is probably fine. You could go to ⅔.

Re the time:
If you do no know how long it will need, start it early so it is ready close to the time you want it. Check on it. If it has a soft texture, it is ready.

Bizi,

After you do a dish two or three times you become good at it. Only the first time feels weird.
And the good thing about cooking is that it does not have to be perfect.

=====
I keep the squash whole --- that way it does not need water to keep it from drying out. I cooks with its own steam.
Here is a recipe for a whole squash.

http://whatscookingamerica.net/Veget...dButternut.htm

Quote:
Baked Whole Butternut Squash Recipe:

Recipe Type: Squash, Vegetables
Yields: 2 to 4 servings
Prep time: 5 min
Cook time: 60 min

Ingredients:

1 (2 to 3 pounds) butternut squash
1 to 2 tablespoons lime juice
Salt and coarsely-ground pepper to taste

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Place whole squash onto an ungreased baking sheet, and prick in a few places with a sharp knife. Bake, uncovered, approximately 60 minutes or until tender. Remove from oven.

Cut squash in half lengthwise and remove fibers and seeds. Season each half with lime juice, salt, and pepper. Cut each half in half again and serve.
(We like ours cooked a little longer than the recipes are showing. Our comes out softer (different texture and the taste is deeper I believe)

Bizi

Let us know how it comes out.

Right now the cooks at my house are my husband and Derrick.

I don't like lots of the things my husband makes. But he has
become more considerate after my accident. Yesterday he
returned from the store, getting what I had asked for Diet Coke.

But he also bought a frozen Lasagna that we both love. And then
he tells me he bought me something, as long as he can have some.
It is a pecan pie. One of my favorites. I usually have to just
buy one to get it in a years time.
