Shocked 2013 August 27: A Flight through the Hubble Ultra Deep Field

Explanation: What would it look like to fly through the distant universe? To find out, a team of astronomers estimated the relative distances to over 5,000 galaxies in one of the most distant fields of galaxies ever imaged: the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). Because it takes light a long time to cross the universe, most galaxies visible in the above video are seen when the universe was only a fraction of its current age, were still forming, and have unusual shapes when compared to modern galaxies. No mature looking spiral galaxies such as our Milky Way or the Andromeda galaxy yet exist. Toward the end of the video the virtual observer flies past the furthest galaxies in the HUDF field, recorded to have a redshift past 8. This early class of low luminosity galaxies likely contained energetic stars emitting light that transformed much of the remaining normal matter in the universe from a cold gas to a hot ionized plasma.

Default Hi waves, bizi, BF Mari

I will get that picture of the galaxy I am working on. Got the base on yesterday. thing weighs about 600 pounds! Trying to get it into Bishops planetarium. Wish me luck! I did a table for a gent, that has connections on the board there. Did a great mosaic for him, and he is giving me a thumbs up for this to get in. I want this more than an art gallery. It belongs at the museum.....xginnie

This big Nebula almost looks like a foot print. There's another one to it's right. Actually there are three nebular's in this picture.

Hi,

These are neat.

Quote:
Explanation: These three bright nebulae are often featured in telescopic tours of the constellation Sagittarius and the crowded starfields of the central Milky Way.

In fact, 18th century cosmic tourist Charles Messier cataloged two of them; M8, the large nebula left of center, and colorful M20 on the right.

The third, NGC 6559, is above M8, separated from the larger nebula by a dark dust lane. All three are stellar nurseries about five thousand light-years or so distant.

Smile A beautiful sight

This is a beautiful sight in space.

2013 September 05: M1 The Incredible Expanding Crab

I know. It's a strange name for something so beautiful.

Default Rad!!

Hi, Steve,

That is wild.

Quote:
The Crab Nebula is cataloged as M1, the first on Charles Messier's famous list of things which are not comets. In fact, the Crab is now known to be a supernova remnant, an expanding cloud of debris from the explosion of a massive star.

The violent birth of the Crab was witnessed by astronomers in the year 1054. Roughly 10 light-years across today, the nebula is still expanding at a rate of over 1,000 kilometers per second. Want to watch the Crab Nebula expand?

Check out this video (vimeo) animation comparing an image of M1 taken in 1999 at the European Southern Observatory, with this one, taken in 2012 at the Mt. Lemmon Sky Center.
